First Day, First Challenge

Sophia barely slept that night. Excitement and nerves tangled in her stomach as she replayed her interview with Alexander Kingston. His intense gaze, the way he'd tested her—everything about him exuded power. And now, she was his assistant.

At exactly 6:45 AM, she stepped into the towering Kingston Enterprises building. She wasn't about to be late on her first day.

"Miss Evans."

Sophia turned to see Ethan Moore, Alexander's right-hand man, waiting for her near the elevators. Dressed sharply in a dark gray suit, Ethan had an easygoing smile—something that felt rare in this cutthroat corporate world.

"Mr. Kingston is already in his office," Ethan said as they stepped into the elevator. "A word of advice—he doesn't like waiting."

Sophia nodded, adjusting the strap of her bag. "Noted."

When she entered the CEO's office, Alexander was already at his desk, reviewing documents. He didn't look up.

"You're late."

Her heart skipped. She glanced at the clock—6:58 AM.

"I was told to be here at seven," she said, keeping her voice steady.

"Exactly. You should have been here earlier," he said coolly, setting his papers down. His piercing blue eyes locked onto hers. "You're my assistant now. Your job isn't to arrive on time—it's to be ahead of time."

Sophia clenched her jaw. "Understood."

A ghost of a smirk touched his lips, as if he enjoyed testing her.

"Good. Now, let's see what you can do."

The First Task

Alexander handed her a thick folder. "You have one hour to go through this and summarize the key points for me."

She took the folder, scanning the dense financial reports inside.

"An hour?" she repeated, slightly incredulous.

His gaze sharpened. "Do you have a problem with that, Miss Evans?"

He's testing me again.

Sophia straightened. "No problem at all."

She took a seat at the side desk, pulling out a notepad. The numbers blurred together at first, but she forced herself to focus. She wasn't just here to work—she was here to prove herself.

Minutes ticked by, tension thick in the office. Alexander barely glanced at her, but she felt his presence, his silent scrutiny.

Exactly fifty-eight minutes later, she walked to his desk and placed the summarized report in front of him.

He picked it up, flipping through the pages. Silence stretched.

Then, to her surprise, he nodded. "Efficient. Accurate." He glanced up. "Not bad."

Sophia exhaled, only now realizing she'd been holding her breath.

"Don't get too comfortable," he added. "This was the easy part."

She met his gaze. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

For a moment, something flickered in his expression—approval, maybe? Then, just as quickly, it was gone.

"Let's see if you can keep up, Miss Evans."

Sophia smiled slightly. "I plan to do more than just keep up, Mr. Kingston."

His eyes darkened slightly, and for a brief second, the professional barrier between them wavered.

This job was going to be more than just work. It was going to be a battle of wills.

And Sophia wasn't planning to lose.
