The intercom had barely finished echoing my agonized scream.
Granger stared blankly, his expression hesitant.
Suddenly, Melody grabbed his face and kissed him directly.
"Granger, forget about Seraphina. Why don't we get married?"
I thought Granger would joyfully agree.
But he looked at Melody very seriously and said, "Melody, I have to marry her."
Hearing those words now, even I find them laughable.
Granger, the person you want to marry has long been abandoned by you, dying miserably in that ancient tomb.
As daylight gradually broke, Granger stayed by Melody's side.
Fearing she might be too shaken, he asked the doctor to set up an IV drip of glucose for her.
He held her extremely tenderly, letting her sleep with her head on his shoulder.
But his gaze kept drifting towards the intercom, growing increasingly anxious.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
It was the archaeology team calling.
"Granger, the ancient tomb has collapsed! We found your and Seraphina's belongings at the scene, but no one can reach her. What the hell is going on? Get over here right away!"
When he heard they couldn't contact me, a flicker of panic crossed Granger's eyes. The phone on the other end kept urging him to provide an explanation.
At that moment, Melody tugged gently on his sleeve, pleading with puppy-dog eyes:
"Granger, I'm about to start my concert, and you promised you'd come watch, so..."
So he couldn't reveal the truth.
Granger's eyes hesitated for a moment, but ultimately he chose to protect Melody once again.
"Seraphina went down to the tomb on her own in the middle of the night, accidentally triggering a mechanism inside that caused the ancient tomb to collapse. I'm sorry, I couldn't stop her..."
I stared at him in disbelief, wanting nothing more than to grab his shoulders and demand answers.
"Granger, how dare you!"
"It's one thing if you don't love me, but you know full well that archaeology is my most cherished career, my lifelong pursuit!"
Yet with those flippant words, it was all erased!
Unfortunately, no one could hear my desperation and anger.
Granger simply turned his head and gave Melody a slight smile.
"Don't worry, your performance won't be affected."
"If Seraphina dares to lie, she'll have to pay the price. Otherwise, she'll never learn her lesson!"
Not long after, the archaeological team arrived at the hospital. The project manager also arrived. He was a highly respected senior archaeologist.
Looking at his dignified face and graying hair at the temples, my eyes instantly welled up with tears.
"Dad..."
