Chapter 18: The Hunter’s Trap

Lila's boots sank deep into the muddy forest floor. Rain pounded her back as she hauled Kade alongside Tala. The three of them lurched through the thick pines like hurt strays. Her arms ached bad. Kade's weight pulled her down. His blood soaked her hands from the rough hole in his ribs. Silver still messed him up, draining his strength. Tala pushed ahead. She limped with the arrow stuck in her shoulder. Blood trailed down her arm, but she kept going. Her knife stayed clutched tight. Her jaw set firm like she'd cut anyone who got close. Hunters' shouts echoed behind them. "She's there! Don't let the rogue girl run!" they yelled. Jaxon's sharp, close howls mixed in. Lila's gut twisted tight. They were trapped. Hunters chased their heels. Wolves flanked their sides. No dang break showed up.
