Chapter 19: Cornered at the Cliff

Lila's breath stuck in her chest as the hunter's boot snapped twigs beside the log. Mud squished under his weight. Rain hammered the ground like it wanted to bury them alive. She pressed tight against Kade. His blood-soaked body stayed close to hers. His leg looked wrecked from that cursed silver trap. Burns sizzled, red and mad, leaking into the dirt. Her hands gripped his arm. They felt slick with sweat and blood. Her heart pounded so hard it might break out. Tala crouched beside her. Her knife stayed ready. Her shoulder bled where the arrow had hit. Her sharp eyes watched the gap, waiting to cut the jerk if he peeked in. "Stay still," Tala hissed. Her voice sounded low and firm. It nearly got lost in the rain's steady thud.
