The night felt unnaturally quiet. The wind had died down, and the usual sounds of the forest were gone. It was as if the world was holding its breath. I kept glancing at the trees, my heart racing. Something was wrong.
Lyra and the old man stood by the fire, their faces grim. The firelight flickered, casting long shadows across the ground. I could tell both of them were on edge, waiting for the attack to come. They knew something I didn't.
I had trained hard over the past few days, pushing myself to understand and control the power of the Abyss. But no matter how much I practiced, I knew I wasn't fully prepared for what lay ahead. The enemies were getting closer, and they weren't the kind of people you could just fight with strength alone. I had to be smarter.
The old man turned to me, his face unreadable. "They're close. Stay alert."
I nodded, but the fear in my chest tightened. How could I stay alert when I didn't even know who or what was coming?
I was starting to get frustrated. I had no idea what kind of enemy we were facing, but I knew it would be dangerous. Every instinct in my body told me to be ready for anything. But what if I wasn't strong enough? What if I couldn't control the Abyss when the time came?
I shook my head, trying to clear the doubts from my mind. I had to trust myself, no matter how scared I felt. The people around me were counting on me. I couldn't let them down.
Suddenly, a rustling sound broke the silence. My heart jumped into my throat. Lyra's hand went to the hilt of her sword, her eyes scanning the forest. The old man stepped forward, his expression focused.
"They're here," he muttered under his breath.
I took a deep breath, my hands tightening around the hilt of my own sword. This was it. The fight had come.
I could see shapes moving in the shadows of the trees. At first, it was hard to make them out, but as they got closer, I could see figures emerging from the darkness. There were at least ten of them, all dressed in dark clothes, their faces hidden behind masks. They moved with purpose, each one silent and precise.
"Stay close," the old man said, his voice low but firm. "These are the ones you need to worry about."
I glanced at him. "Who are they?"
"Enemies," was all he said.
I didn't have time to ask more questions. The first of the attackers lunged at me, his sword raised high. I barely had time to react, but I managed to block his strike, pushing him back with a grunt. My arms shook with the force, but I didn't let that stop me. I had to stay focused.
Another attacker came from the side, aiming for Lyra. She parried his blow expertly, her movements fluid and fast. I saw the way she moved—she was a skilled fighter, and she wasn't afraid to face the danger head-on. She was already several steps ahead of me, but I wasn't going to let that hold me back. I had my own battles to fight.
The old man was already engaged in combat with two others, moving with surprising speed for someone his age. I watched as he dodged their attacks and struck back with precision, his staff moving like a blur. He wasn't just defending himself—he was attacking, pushing the enemies back one by one.
I took a deep breath, focusing on the Abyss inside me. It was still there, waiting for me to use it. But I had to be careful. If I let it take over completely, I wouldn't be able to control the fight.
I drew on the energy, letting the dark power flow through me, but I kept it contained. I wasn't going to make the same mistake again. I wouldn't let it control me. I focused on my opponent, the one who had attacked me first.
He came at me again, faster this time, and I was ready. I blocked his strike and twisted my body, using his momentum to push him off balance. Before he could recover, I struck with my sword, cutting through the air. The blow landed, and he staggered back, a surprised look on his face.
I didn't wait for him to recover. I pressed the attack, my sword moving faster than I thought possible. I had to finish this quickly. But the more I fought, the more I could feel the power of the Abyss coursing through me. It was like a fire burning inside my chest, and I had to control it.
The enemy swung his sword again, but this time I was ready. I dodged his blow and stepped in close, using the momentum of my body to land a solid strike. His sword fell from his hand as he staggered back, defeated.
I didn't have time to catch my breath. Another attacker was coming at me, and I could see the determination in his eyes. He wasn't going to give up easily.
But I wasn't going to let him win.
I blocked his strike and quickly countered, slashing across his chest. He grunted in pain, but he didn't fall. Instead, he raised his sword again, his eyes filled with fury.
I had to end this quickly.
I drew on the Abyss one more time, letting the power surge through me. The darkness swirled around me, and I felt stronger than ever. The enemy's attack came at me, but this time, I didn't just block it—I struck with all my strength, using the Abyss to fuel my movement.
The man's sword broke in half as my strike landed. He stumbled back, wide-eyed, and I took the opportunity to strike again. This time, he didn't get up.
I turned to see Lyra fighting two more attackers, her sword flashing in the firelight. She was quick, her movements graceful but deadly. She parried and struck with precision, taking down one of the enemies in a single strike.
The old man was still fighting, but it seemed like he was starting to slow down. I could tell he was getting tired, and the number of attackers was still growing. There were too many of them. We couldn't keep fighting like this.
I had to find a way to end it.
"Lyra!" I shouted. "We need to end this now!"
She glanced at me, nodding as she took down another attacker. "I'm with you."
I turned back to the old man, who was still holding his ground. "Can you push them back long enough for us to end this?"
He looked at me, his expression grim. "Do what you need to do."
I nodded, and together, Lyra and I stepped forward, side by side. The last few attackers were closing in on us, but we weren't going to let them win. We would end this, together.
