Chapter 17: A Slow Renewal

Months had passed since Nyxara's promise to be the light in Riven's life. Slowly, with each passing day, she saw subtle changes in him. The coldness that once consumed him had begun to thaw, bit by bit, and the darkness that seemed to follow him was no longer so overwhelming.

Their conversations, once strained and brief, had turned into something deeper, more meaningful. Riven, though still carrying his pain, started to share more with her—small details about his life, his memories of his wife, and even moments of laughter that felt like forgotten pieces of himself returning.

Nyxara never pressured him. She simply showed up, a quiet presence in his life, and slowly, she noticed that he no longer withdrew when she was near. When they sat together, he smiled more often, a genuine warmth returning to his eyes. There were still moments of grief, of course, but they didn't define him anymore.

One afternoon, as they sat together at the same coffee shop, Riven looked at Nyxara with something new in his eyes—appreciation, maybe even affection. "You've helped me more than you know," he said quietly, his voice filled with gratitude.

Nyxara smiled softly, feeling a sense of peace. "I'm just glad you're finding your way again."

And for the first time in a long while, Riven seemed to truly believe it.
