Keeping Secrets

Leah held his gaze, keeping her expression neutral. No way was she telling him the real reason.

"Just… passing through," she said with a small shrug. "Looking around."

Aamon arched a brow, clearly unconvinced. "Looking around?"

She nodded, shifting her weight. "Yeah. You know, sightseeing. Small towns have history." Technically, not a lie. She was here for journalistic research but he didn't need to know that.

Aamon hummed, watching her carefully. "Hmm. Is that so?"

Leah forced a casual smile. "Yep."

For a moment, he said nothing, his gaze lingering on her like he could see straight through the excuse. Then, with a slow smirk, he stepped back.

"Alright then, Leah the Sightseer." His voice was smooth, almost teasing. "Hope you enjoy your stay."

Something about the way he said it made her stomach twist. Like he knew she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.
