chapter 6: a love too heavy to bear

---

The days after that fateful night blurred into one long, haunting memory for Kaori. The air was heavy with unsaid words and unspoken fears, and no matter where she went, the weight of Ryo's words hung over her like a thick fog. The promise she made to stay by his side, to face whatever awaited them together, felt like an anchor, dragging her deeper into an ocean she couldn't see.

Each day, Ryo's behavior grew more distant. He would show up to their usual meeting spots, but there was always a shift in the way he looked at her—as if he were searching for something, or perhaps trying to remember who they had been before this darkness swallowed them both.

Kaori had tried to keep their interactions light, the way they had been before the shadows crept into their lives. But it was becoming harder. The lightness between them was gone, replaced by a weight that pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe, hard to think. She could feel Ryo's distance growing, the way he recoiled at the smallest touch or glance, and it was breaking her in ways she couldn't describe.

She hadn't asked him about the thing he had warned her about—whatever it was that was "watching them." She couldn't. Not because she didn't want to know, but because she feared the truth. She had seen it in his eyes that night by the river—the terror, the hopelessness. He was breaking, piece by piece, and she didn't know if there was anything she could do to save him. To save them.

It was early one evening when Kaori finally decided to confront him. She had waited for weeks, hoping things might get better, that the strange tension between them would ease, but it never did. She needed answers, needed to understand the things he had been hiding from her. She couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine when it felt like the ground beneath her was slowly crumbling away.

She found him at their usual bench near the old park, the place where they had shared so many quiet moments, laughing and talking as if the world around them didn't exist. But now, everything felt wrong. The sky was clouded, the faint breeze carrying an unsettling chill that seemed to crawl into her bones.

Ryo was already sitting there, his gaze directed downward, his hands clasped tightly together as if he were trying to hold himself together. He didn't look up when she approached, but she could feel the tension radiating from him, the way he seemed to shrink away from her very presence.

"Ryo," she whispered, taking a step closer. "We need to talk."

He flinched at the sound of her voice, his shoulders stiffening. "Kaori..."

She ignored the pain in his voice and sat down beside him, her heart pounding in her chest. She could see the way he was trembling, the way his eyes darted to the side as if he were afraid to look at her.

"What's going on, Ryo?" she asked, her voice barely more than a murmur, but it carried the weight of a thousand questions. "What aren't you telling me? I know something's wrong. You've been pulling away from me, and it's... it's killing me."

He turned to face her then, his eyes empty, hollow. She could see the exhaustion in them, the way he was fighting against something inside himself. But what? What was it that was tearing him apart?

"I... I don't want you to get involved," he said, his voice trembling as he struggled to keep his composure. "You don't know what you're asking for. If I tell you, if you really understand... I can't protect you anymore. I won't be able to keep you safe."

Kaori felt her heart break at his words. "I don't need you to protect me, Ryo. I need you to be honest with me. Please."

For a long moment, there was nothing but silence. The world around them seemed to stand still, the weight of his hesitation heavy in the air. And then, with a deep, shuddering breath, Ryo finally spoke.

"I'm not who you think I am," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I never was. I'm not just a person you met by chance. I'm not just someone who can be here with you, live a normal life with you... I can't be. There's something about me... something dark that I can't escape. I thought I could hide it, thought I could protect you from it. But it's too late for that now."

Kaori's heart raced, her mind spinning as she tried to make sense of his words. "What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice rising with panic. "You're scaring me, Ryo. What do you mean you're not who I think you are?"

He closed his eyes, his face contorting in anguish. "I didn't want you to find out this way. But there's no other way to say it—there's a curse on me. A curse that's been following me for years, something I can't escape. It's tied to me in ways I don't understand. But it's been growing stronger, Kaori. It's already started to pull you in. You've been marked. And now—now it won't stop until it takes everything from us."

Kaori's mind raced, her thoughts scrambling to catch up to the overwhelming flood of information. A curse? How could something like that exist? How could it be tied to Ryo? To her?

"Ryo, no..." she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "What do you mean it's marked me? What's going to happen to us?"

Ryo didn't meet her eyes as he spoke again, his words hollow. "It's already happening. You've felt it, haven't you? The way things are changing, the way everything around us is starting to feel... wrong. That's because of me, Kaori. Because of the curse. It's spreading, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."

Tears blurred Kaori's vision as the reality of his words began to sink in. This wasn't just about them being pulled apart by circumstances. This was something deeper, darker. Something that had always been there, lurking just beneath the surface.

"I don't care about any of that," she choked out, her voice breaking. "I don't care about the curse or the darkness or whatever's pulling us apart. I love you, Ryo. And I'll face it all with you. I'll never leave you."

For a moment, Ryo just stared at her, his eyes wide, as though he couldn't believe what she was saying. His lips trembled, and a single tear slid down his cheek.

"I wish I could believe that," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "But I'm not the person you think I am, Kaori. And I don't want to drag you into this..."

But it was too late. The darkness had already seeped into their lives, and there was no turning back.
