The moment Noah and Avery stepped past the KEEP OUT sign, the air around them seemed to shift. The trees loomed taller, their branches reaching out like silent watchers. Moonlight barely pierced through the thick canopy, and every step they took crunched against fallen leaves and twigs.
Noah shivered, gripping the notebook in his hoodie pocket. "This place is way creepier at night."
Avery swung her flashlight around, illuminating the twisted roots and overgrown path ahead. "Yeah, but that just means we're definitely on the right track."
They followed the trail, their footsteps the only sound besides the occasional hoot of an owl. The notebook's cryptic clue kept circling in Noah's mind.
"For those who seek the light, follow the path unseen."
The path unseen. What did that mean?
Avery suddenly stopped short. "Whoa."
Noah nearly bumped into her. "What?"
She pointed her flashlight ahead. The trail they'd been following… just ended.
The dirt path faded into thick, tangled brush. There was no clear way forward.
"That's… not good," Noah muttered.
Avery crossed her arms. "Your dad wouldn't leave some cryptic message just for the trail to be a dead end. There's gotta be something we're missing."
Noah frowned, glancing down at the journal again. His dad's words had been specific. Seek the light. Follow the path unseen.
Then it clicked.
He switched off his flashlight.
Avery turned to him, confused. "Uh, dude? I don't know if you've noticed, but it's, like, pitch black—"
"Trust me," Noah said. "Just turn yours off."
Avery hesitated, then clicked her flashlight off.
Darkness swallowed them.
Noah's breath hitched as his eyes adjusted. And then—
A faint glow.
Through the trees, barely visible in the distance, a dim, bluish light flickered. It was coming from somewhere deeper in the forest.
Avery gasped. "No freaking way."
"The path unseen," Noah murmured. "It's only visible in the dark."
His heart pounded with excitement and unease. Whatever his father had found… it was waiting for them.
Avery nudged him. "Well? What are we standing around for? Let's go see what's glowing in the middle of a creepy, abandoned forest."
Noah swallowed his nerves. "Yeah. Let's do this."
With the light as their guide, they stepped forward, leaving the beaten path behind.
And into the unknown.
