Chapter 22: The Glow in the Dark

Noah and Avery moved carefully through the tangled underbrush, guided only by the soft blue glow ahead. Without their flashlights, the forest felt even more alive—every rustling leaf, every distant snap of a twig sent shivers down Noah's spine.

"What if this is, like… I don't know, alien tech?" Avery whispered.

Noah shot her a look. "Seriously?"

She shrugged. "I mean, you ever see anything glow like that in the middle of nowhere?"

Noah wanted to say yes, but the truth was… he hadn't. The glow pulsed faintly, almost like it was alive, hidden just beyond the thick trees.

As they got closer, the trees finally thinned out, revealing a small clearing. At the center, half-buried under vines and dirt, was something metallic.

Avery's breath hitched. "No way."

Noah stepped forward, brushing away the leaves. Beneath them, a bronze plaque was embedded into the ground. The glow wasn't coming from the plaque itself, but from thin, glowing lines running through it, forming an intricate pattern.

"What is this?" Noah whispered, running his fingers over the smooth surface.

Avery crouched beside him. "Dude… there's something written here."

Noah squinted, tracing the engraved words. Despite the years of dirt and overgrowth, the letters were still legible.

"To those who seek the truth, follow where the light leads."

A chill ran down Noah's spine. This was left here for someone to find.

Avery exhaled. "Okay, I take back the alien thing. This is some National Treasure stuff."

Noah's fingers brushed against the edge of the plaque… and suddenly, the glow intensified.

A deep click echoed from beneath them.

The ground trembled.

Avery shot up. "Uh… Noah?"

Before he could respond, the dirt around the plaque shifted—and then, part of the ground slid open, revealing a set of stone steps leading underground.

Noah's heart pounded. "That… that's not normal."

Avery's eyes sparkled. "Are you kidding? This is the coolest thing that's ever happened to us."

Noah swallowed hard, staring down into the dark passage. His dad had left him a message. Had he known about this?

Was this what he was supposed to find?

Avery nudged him. "So… you going first, or am I?"

Noah took a deep breath.

Then, gripping the edge of the entrance for support, he took the first step down.
