Elaine sat by the window of her bedroom, staring blankly outside as the city lights flickered in the distance. No matter how much she tried to distract herself, her mind always found its way back to Alexander. Every day felt suffocating—seeing him with Olivia, hearing about their engagement, watching as he fulfilled the role of a devoted fiancé. And every day, her heart broke a little more.
She had loved him for so long, and yet, he had never truly been hers. That realization tormented her, making it impossible to breathe, to move on, to even exist without pain creeping in. Love was supposed to be beautiful, but for her, it had become a slow, agonizing torture.
A sudden knock on the door snapped her out of her thoughts.
"Elaine! Open up!" Mary's voice rang through.
Sighing, Elaine pulled herself off the bed and opened the door. Mary barged in, eyes filled with determination, as if she had made some grand discovery.
"You need a distraction," Mary declared, hands on her hips.
Elaine blinked. "What?"
"A distraction. And I know just the thing—you need a boy."
Elaine's heart skipped a beat, and she took a step back. "What are you talking about?"
Mary rolled her eyes. "Look, I love you, but you're miserable, and it's all because of Alexander. You need to move on, and the best way to do that is to focus on someone else. You don't have to fall in love right away, but you need something—someone—to help you forget."
Elaine bit her lip, the idea settling heavily in her mind. Could she really do that? Could she just turn her heart away from Alexander and direct it somewhere else? The thought felt foreign, almost impossible. But as she sat there, thinking about the constant pain, the restless nights, the unbearable weight pressing on her chest—she knew she had to try. She was already hurting so badly, and it was affecting her health. If she kept going like this, she would destroy herself. She didn't want to be miserable any longer.
"Mary… I don't know how to like someone else. I've only ever loved him," she admitted softly. "How can I just… use someone to forget my feelings? Isn't that unfair?"
Mary sighed, placing a comforting hand on Elaine's shoulder. "I'm not saying you have to use anyone. But you can't keep letting Alexander ruin you. You need to at least give yourself a chance to heal, and sometimes, the best way to do that is to let someone else in."
Elaine lowered her gaze, her heart torn between logic and emotion. She wanted to forget, to move on, but could she truly open her heart to someone else when it still belonged to Alexander? But then again, if she didn't try, she would only continue to drown in this endless sorrow.
Taking a deep breath, she made a decision. "You're right. I need to distract myself. It's already too much for me. I can't keep living like this. Maybe… if I try to like someone else, it will help. I hope so."
Mary grinned. "That's all I ask. And trust me, once you start seeing the possibilities, you'll realize Alexander isn't the only man in the world."
Elaine nodded, though deep inside, she wondered if she could ever truly let go. But she was determined now. She had to try, for her own sake. The pain had already affected her too much—her heart, her mind, even her health.
With newfound determination, she laid down on her bed, letting exhaustion take over. As her eyes fluttered shut, she clung to the hope that maybe, just maybe, she could heal.
