first encounter

Adrian Blackwood and his team had once again secured victory, winning match after match with ease. As the final game ended, the crowd began to disperse, leaving the auditorium buzzing with excitement. Some dedicated fans lingered, eager for a chance to congratulate the star player. His teammates clapped him on the back, celebrating yet another well-earned win.

Just as Adrian was about to leave the auditorium, a voice called his name, stopping him in his tracks. The moment froze, and all eyes turned toward the source of the voice.

There she stood—Elaine.

Whispers filled the air as students exchanged glances. The boys looked on in awe, fully aware of who she was. Elaine, the daughter of the most powerful business tycoon, a girl shrouded in an air of mystery and unattainable beauty. Her long brown hair cascaded effortlessly over her shoulders, framing striking grey eyes that held an unreadable depth. Her sharp nose and full pouty lips only added to her allure, and her tall, graceful figure set her apart from most girls in college.

She was the undisputed belle of the college, admired yet distant, envied yet unknowable. Many believed she led a charmed life—beauty, wealth, and status seamlessly woven together.

But no one truly knew her.

No one knew the weight of the secrets she carried, how her radiant smile concealed an ocean of sadness. No one knew that her birthright had been deliberately hidden by her own father to protect his reputation, forcing her into the shadows of her own legacy.

And now, here she was, standing before Adrian Blackwood, her presence commanding attention even without trying. Some might have thought she was a fan coming to give him a love letter, but all those thoughts halted when they heard her say, "Hey Adrian, can you teach me basketball? I might join the girls' team. So, what do you say?"

Adrian looked at her without any expression. Elaine felt nervous, trying hard not to show it. An itch prickled at her scalp, but she stood frozen as he continued to stare at her without blinking. The air around them seemed to tense, the entire auditorium waiting for his response. Then, after what felt like an eternity, he nodded slowly.

Gasps echoed across the gym. Some of the girls held their breath, the men in the room stiffening as if feeling secondhand nervousness for her. What if Adrian was harsh with her?

Elaine smiled at him, trying to appear unfazed. "Okay, so I'll be here in the morning. Don't be late."

Adrian, still dumbfounded by his own reaction, simply nodded again before walking away. He had no idea why he agreed—but nonetheless, he had.

As soon as Adrian left, Mary rushed over and hugged Elaine tightly. "What kind of magic did you just do?" she squealed. "You actually got Adrian Blackwood to agree!"

Elaine chuckled, trying to mask her own uncertainty. "I guess I just asked."

Ryan, on the other hand, sulked in the corner, arms crossed as he shot occasional glances at Elaine. Mary smirked at him before turning back to Elaine. "I knew you were finally taking my advice! You're really distracting yourself now, huh?"

But Elaine had other plans.

She wasn't doing this for the reason Mary thought. She wasn't looking for a romantic distraction. She wanted to keep herself busy—to lose herself in something other than her pain. She had heard Adrian was strict, and that's exactly what she needed. Someone who wouldn't go easy on her, someone who would push her limits. Maybe, just maybe, she could forget—even if just for a little while.
