Chapter 31: Virt Robert Tries to Walk the Right Path
Robert regretted shouting the words the moment they left his mouth.
But some things, once uttered, could never be taken back.
He braced his hands on the desk, half-standing, bearing the gazes of almost every student in his year. Suddenly, his mind cleared, and he understood his predicament.
…
"Broheim, do you have an issue with Emma Metis?"
Dark's voice remained calm and devoid of emotion as always.
However, Robert detected a different undertone. Cold sweat instantly broke out on his forehead, and his legs nearly trembled.
The story of the millionaire Jamie resonated with him too strongly.
He had already been emotionally unstable from being exposed for not doing his homework. Now, with this story, it felt as if he himself had been swindled out of over 21 million credits by Emma! He had completely lost control and exploded!
"It's over, I've completely messed up!"
Robert was utterly despondent, not even noticing Virt frantically tugging at his sleeve.
"Broheim, I'll ask again, do you have an issue with Emma Metis?"
Dark stood on the podium and asked for the second time.
Robert could only bite the bullet and reply, "No, no issue."
Dark: "In that case, Broheim, ten points deducted."
…
Arithmetic class ended.
Dark packed his textbooks and headed to Professor Lily's office, intending to tidy it up for her, or at least throw out all the empty wine bottles.
The first-year students waited until he left before erupting into a commotion!
The Noble House students were the most excited because Dark's lesson had been truly fantastic!
They were all saying they'd rather have Dark teach every class from now on instead of Professor Lily!
Even the Magic House students had to admit Dark's performance in this class.
The Fool House students were also genuinely full of praise.
Only the Knight House students endured strange looks from the other three houses, their hearts a mix of emotions.
In this class, they had been like negative examples, members of a clown's circus troupe.
And Robert, the designated clown, nearly burrowed himself under the desk!
He had been deducted a full twenty points in this one class!
Not only were all his base points for the class wiped out, but Virt's base points were also gone!
Originally, the brothers had accumulated 75 points together, and it seemed they were only 5 points away from clearing their debt. Yet, these 5 points had become an insurmountable chasm!
Whose fault was this, ultimately?
Certainly not Dark's.
Dark had already been lenient enough!
No one could argue with that!
Then it could only be his own fault.
Not doing homework, and then yelling in class.
He could tear his hair out!
…
"Sorry, it's all my fault."
Robert groaned in a corner somewhere.
Virt leaned against the wall, lost in thought, and lightly said, "It's alright, Robert, let's just borrow 5 points from someone."
Before, Robert was the one comforting him, but now the roles were reversed.
Virt wasn't as angry.
The main thing was that Robert had regained his senses at the end and hadn't blown things out of proportion.
Otherwise, whether Emma would be in trouble or not was uncertain, but they definitely would have been!
Being made an example, being hung on St. Marian's pillar of shame for a full six years, was not something a minor magic practitioner could bear.
In this matter, they weren't simply victims.
Once exposed, perhaps the protagonist in the story Dark told wouldn't be the so-called "millionaire Jamie," but rather "Virt, the son of the hero, and his little buddy"!
Thinking about how popular he had been when school started.
And how in just one month, he had become a disliked debtor.
Virt felt a wave of disappointment wash over him.
"If I had been studying diligently since the beginning of school, would the person standing on the podium be me? Instead of Dark?"
…
Things didn't develop as Virt hoped.
They hadn't been able to borrow money last night, so how could today noon be any different?
The first-year students, after listening to Dark's little story, might not have realized the importance of arithmetic, but they definitely realized the importance of credits!
So, they were holding onto their credits even tighter!
Virt and Robert couldn't truly bring themselves to beg shamelessly, or directly explain their reasons for needing help.
Frequent borrowing had only made them even more disliked!
…
At 12:45 PM, Virt did some calculations.
In fifteen minutes, the debt would double, from 80 to 160.
And they only had 75 points, still needing 85 more!
Before the next deadline, there were only three classes left.
Three classes guaranteed a base of 60 points. To gather enough credits in these three classes, they needed to earn an extra 25 bonus points!
Virt said somberly, "Robert, let's study seriously!"
Robert covered his mouth, "But Virt, did you do the Magic History homework?"
Virt: "..."
…
Professor Lily's office.
"Come on, drink this hangover soup, and let bygones be bygones!"
"No, no! Gently, it's going to spill! Glug glug~ So bitter~ Wuu wuu wuu!"
Dark placed the empty bowl of special hangover soup on the table, finally relieved.
Professor Lily wasn't just a first-year professor.
If he hadn't woken her up by noon, he might have been forced to substitute teach in a senior class!
At that point, he couldn't exactly teach calculus or quantum mathematics, could he?
Perhaps teaching some geometry might be a good idea?
He was just afraid that teaching it might bring out a sense of superiority, and that would be GG.
In any case, thanks to the little devil beast's charm, the special hangover soup he got from the halfling chefs, although a bit bitter, was exceptionally effective.
Professor Lily sat up looking listless, her coat slipping off her shoulders, revealing her smooth, jade-like shoulders and collarbones.
Dark swiftly retrieved his coat and, not giving Professor Lily any chance to play tricks, said, "Professor, I still have class, so I won't disturb you any longer. Also, I've already gone over all of last week's homework, (^_^)/~~886."
"Bang!"
…
The afternoon's Magic History class finally went smoothly.
Professor Didi, as always, read from her prepared materials, occasionally calling on one or two students to answer questions.
Generally speaking, as long as you didn't fall asleep in this class, it was almost impossible to lose points.
Virt and Robert arrived at the classroom early to rush through their homework. Although it was a mess, any further point deductions would be for the next class…
As soon as class ended, the two hurried to the library.
Since school started, they had never been this proactive.
Wednesday morning's two classes were Potionology and Summoning Art. To earn an extra 25 points in these two classes, it was truly difficult.
They had to perform even better than Dark, even better than Emma!
…
Emma entered the library a step behind, just in time to see the backs of the two as they hastily disappeared.
"Has it begun?"
She murmured softly to herself, then turned and entered the reading room from another direction, heading to her usual seat.
After sitting down, she pulled out the heavy Legendary Tales of Historical Figures from her bag, opening it to the page marked with a bookmark.
Portrait.
On the left was a portrait, and on the right was the legend of this person.
Reading through the account again, Emma couldn't help but mutter, "I didn't expect that what Dark taught today would have such similar ideas to this story."
