Tessa's situation - wasn't that all orchestrated by you?! Otherwise, my child would still be in her room, lively and energetic, calling me 'Mommy'!
The overwhelming hatred was almost more than I could suppress, and tears were the first to escape my eyes.
"But she always wanted you to play with her when she was alive! Now you're not even willing to come to her funeral! Lorne, you don't deserve to be her father!"
Lorne saw me crying again, and his annoyance was barely contained.
He reached out to hit me several times, but lowered his hand when faced with my stubborn, unyielding gaze.
"What do you want from me?! Julie! I've been lenient enough with you! I admit I was wrong not to come to the funeral today! I apologize to you and Tessa, is that enough?!"
I stepped back and spoke from my heart: "I don't want your apology! I want my daughter back!"
Lorne was about to say more when the fingerprint lock beeped again.
Mira entered with a grief-stricken face, paused seeing Lorne and me in confrontation, her expression seemingly guilty.
"I'm sorry, Julie, I'm truly sorry. I didn't mean to post on Facebook! I really didn't know today was your daughter's funeral! I could only come to pay respects now! Please try to find some comfort!"I was blindsided by the question of how she had programmed her fingerprint into my home security system. At that moment, hearing her feigned sympathy, I could no longer contain my fury: "How dare you show your face here?!"
Without waiting for her response, I charged at her, knocking her to the ground, and slapped her hard across the face.
"How dare you come here?! What gives you the right to attend my daughter's funeral?! Both Tessa and I find your presence revolting! Get the hell out!"
"That's enough! Calm down!"
Lorne rushed forward and yanked me off of her.
"...I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come. Especially with Dane on the verge of recovery, I shouldn't have upset you like this. I'm truly sorry, Julie."
Mira covered her face as tears streamed down, her apology a thinly veiled mask of satisfaction.
Just as I was about to unleash another tirade, Lorne's angry roar cut me off: "That's enough! You can't blame Mira and Dane for Tessa's death! What do they have to do with any of this?! I'm the one who didn't attend the funeral! If you want to yell at someone, yell at me!"
I stared at Lorne's face, realizing he felt not an ounce of remorse for Tessa's passing. His concern was solely for Mira and Dane. Rage consumed me, and I violently overturned the coffee table.
"Get out! All of you, get out!"While they stood there stunned, I grabbed the vase and anything else within reach that I could smash.
"Get out! All of you! I don't want to see you!"
"You've completely lost your mind! We're leaving!"
Lorne dragged Mira away, his face dark with anger.
I stared blankly at the mess strewn across the floor.
For a moment I wanted to cry, but realized I had already shed all my tears for Tessa today.
In the end, I could only sink slowly to the ground, curling up and wrapping my arms around myself in a futile embrace.
Ding dong.
Just then, Lorne sent me a message. In a daze, I picked up my phone from where it had fallen on the floor along with the coffee table.
"Julie, listen to me. Tessa is dead! Accept it! Don't contact me again until you've come to terms with reality."
I let out a harsh laugh, my voice raspy: "Lorne, don't worry. I won't be contacting you ever again..."
Not long after, Mira sent me a message too - a photo of her shopping with Lorne, hand in hand, looking blissfully happy.
On the very day of their daughter's funeral, showing not a hint of grief, laughing and shopping with their first love!
