The 911 dispatcher came over afterwards, finally rescuing me from the reporters' clutches.

Callie, once a colleague and now my best friend, anxiously eyed my belly.

"Lacey, you were this close to losing the baby, do you realize that?"

"Your pregnancy is already high-risk. You need to be careful, extra careful, and then some."

I nodded, indicating that I understood.

Then I frantically tried to throw off the blanket, desperate to go home.

"Callie, if word of my pregnancy reaches Tiernan, I'm terrified of what he might do."

"I need to leave right away."

He's told me more than once how much he wanted children. Back then, he only got together with Scarlett because he thought I couldn't have any.

I can't gamble with this baby's life.

Seeing my urgency, Callie reluctantly held me back.

Pointing to a suitcase on the floor, she said, "Here, I figured you'd be like this, so I packed for you in advance."
