Fractured Paths

The Silver Curse – Volume 2, Chapter 9: Fractured Paths

A Heavy Decision

Yuto sat in the dimly lit corner of the guild tavern, the sealed document resting on the table before him. He had read it three times now, yet the weight of its contents only grew heavier each time. The Guildmaster's words echoed in his mind.

"This is your next step. A test, if you will. Read it. Think it over. Then decide if you're ready."

Mira, seated across from him, tapped a finger against the wooden surface impatiently. "You gonna stare at that thing all night, or are you actually gonna make a decision?"

Yuto exhaled through his nose. "It's not that simple."

Mira snorted. "It never is. But sitting around brooding won't make it any easier. What does it say, anyway?"

Yuto hesitated before sliding the parchment across the table. Mira unfolded it, her sharp crimson eyes scanning the contents. As she read, her expression shifted from mild curiosity to something more serious.

"This isn't just a test," she muttered. "This is a death sentence."

The Trial of the Forsaken

The document detailed an assignment known as The Trial of the Forsaken—an infamous challenge issued only to adventurers who had drawn too much attention, either for their skill or for the danger they posed. It wasn't just a test of strength; it was a trial by fire, designed to push its participants to their limits, or break them entirely.

The task was clear: Hunt and eliminate a rogue knight named Varek, a former elite adventurer turned fugitive.

Varek wasn't just any target. He was once considered an unstoppable force within the guild, a warrior of unmatched prowess. His fall from grace remained shrouded in secrecy, but rumors claimed he had succumbed to something unnatural.

Something that changed him.

Yuto clenched his jaw. Of course, they wouldn't just let me rise without a cost.

Mira tossed the parchment back onto the table. "You realize what this means, right?"

Yuto nodded. "They want to see if I'll survive. Or if I'll become just like him."

A Path Not Walked Alone

The weight of the curse pulsed against his fingers. The rings had been growing more restless lately, whispering more frequently, their pull stronger than ever. The Silver Curse was waking up.

Mira leaned forward. "You're not doing this alone."

Yuto raised a brow. "This is my test."

"Yeah? Well, screw that. If the guild wants to play games, they'll have to deal with me too. You're strong, Yuto, but I don't trust them. Something about this stinks."

Yuto didn't argue. Deep down, he knew she was right. The guild's motives weren't entirely clear, and this trial felt like something more than just a test.

A shadow passed by the tavern window. A figure standing just out of sight, watching.

Yuto's grip on his sword tightened. "We're being followed."

Mira smirked, placing a hand on her dagger. "Guess they didn't want to wait until morning."
