The Silver Curse – Volume 2, Chapter 8: The Guildmaster's Judgment
A Heavy Summons
Yuto followed the guild officer through the winding halls of Valkris's Adventurer's Guild. The noise of the main hall faded behind him, replaced by the sound of boots against stone and the occasional flicker of torchlight.
Mira walked beside him, arms crossed. "You sure this isn't a trap?"
"Doubt it," Yuto muttered. "If they wanted me dead, they wouldn't be this formal about it."
The officer glanced back at them. "Enough talking. The Guildmaster doesn't like to be kept waiting."
The air was thick with tension. Yuto felt the weight of his rings pulsing against his fingers, a reminder of the power lurking within him. He pushed the feeling aside and focused. Whatever this meeting was about, he had to be ready.
The Guildmaster's Chamber
The door to the Guildmaster's chamber was massive—dark oak reinforced with metal, marked with carvings of past warriors. The officer pushed it open, revealing a spacious room lit by an enormous chandelier. The walls were lined with maps, records, and trophies from past expeditions.
Seated behind an ornate wooden desk was a broad-shouldered man with a scar running across his cheek. His gaze was sharp, piercing through Yuto the moment he entered.
"Yuto," the Guildmaster said, his voice deep and measured. "Sit."
Yuto obeyed, Mira standing at his side. The officer closed the door behind them, leaving the room quiet except for the crackling fireplace.
The Guildmaster leaned forward. "You've been making waves."
Yuto met his gaze. "That a bad thing?"
The older man chuckled, though there was no warmth in it. "Depends. Some see strength as an asset. Others see it as a threat. The question is—what are you?"
The Unspoken Warning
The Guildmaster tapped a parchment on his desk. "Your recent quests. The direwolves, the missing adventurers, and now this—" he gestured toward the papers. "There's a pattern."
Yuto frowned. "What kind of pattern?"
"Unnatural occurrences. Creatures behaving differently. And more importantly, survivors saying the same thing—a silver-haired warrior, moving like something beyond human."
Mira tensed beside him. Yuto remained silent.
The Guildmaster studied him carefully. "I don't know what's happening with you, but I do know this—power like that doesn't come without a cost."
His gaze flickered to Yuto's hands. The rings.
"They've noticed you, Yuto. And once you have their attention, it doesn't go away."
A Choice to Make
Silence stretched between them. Yuto could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him. He wasn't just another adventurer to them anymore.
"What do you want from me?" Yuto finally asked.
The Guildmaster exhaled. "I want to know what you're after. Are you just another sellsword, chasing coin and fame? Or is there something more?"
Yuto didn't answer immediately. The Silver Curse pulsed against his fingers again, whispering its own desires, its own hunger.
"I want to grow stronger," he said at last. "And I want answers."
The Guildmaster nodded slowly. "Then let's see how far you're willing to go."
He pulled out a sealed document, sliding it across the desk. "This is your next step. A test, if you will. Read it. Think it over. Then decide if you're ready."
Yuto picked up the envelope, his pulse steady despite the storm raging inside him.
Mira smirked. "Looks like you just got promoted to interesting."
Yuto said nothing, but deep down, he knew—this was the beginning of something far bigger than he ever expected.
