I frown, meditatively. A sick excitement courses through me.

“What do you want?” I ask, unable to suppress my enthusiasm. The thought of Regan and his family destroyed, thrilling. 

“I need a wife and pregnancy, so that my father can hand over the entire business to me.” 

I frown, wondering what that has to do with me. 

“Marry me tomorrow and sign an agreement to get pregnant for me. Then watch the first wave of The Heartstones’ devastation.”

Regan's my brother. Regan's a product of dad's sin with Laura? I recall the fight my parents had 18 years ago. I was twelve. Mum left. We were distraught.

Now I realize the reason mum was furious. Dad cheated with Laura Heartstone. And Regan is product of that affair.

I stare at Lucas as he sinks to the ground. A gaping hole in his chest. Regan just shot Lucas for me. My blood brother just shot someone he's lived with for most of his life for me.

A cry escapes Paul's throat as he rushes to Lucas' before he falls. Paul holds Lucas tight as he weeps into his chest. Lucas gasps a few times. Blood. So much of it. Finally he rolls his head back and dies.

Paul stays like that for a while, his head bent over his dead son. I know he wouldn't lie low. I take a step towards a dazed Regan before Paul retaliates. But I'm not fast enough. In a flash of lightning, Paul grabs his gun and shoots Regan in his stomach.
