Chapter 226: The Death of Nick Fury
"What are your plans after this? Returning to Asgard?"
George continued asking.
He knew it was only a matter of time before Thor picked up the Mjölnir, so it wasn't surprising.
"George, thank you all for your help, but I'm afraid I'll have to trouble you for a while longer.
During this time, through your books and television, I've found that the problems of humanity are far more serious than those of the divine realm. Compared to the divine realm, perhaps Midgard needs me more."
Thor closed the book and said,
"So I plan to stay in Midgard long-term to help humanity. Anyway, with the Bifrost, I can return anytime if something comes up."
"Isn't it because of Jane?
I heard from Logan that you've been dating often recently."
George gave him a look that every man understood.
Thor immediately coughed:
"Ah, well… that is part of the reason, of course, but definitely not the main one.
As the ruler of the Nine Realms, Asgard has the responsibility to protect them. As the God of Thunder and the future king of Asgard, I naturally also have the duty to protect humanity."
"Alright, whatever the reason, we're happy to have you stay."
George patted Thor on the shoulder, then walked toward the school's basement.
He still had some areas to upgrade, such as using the Seamless Expansion Charm to enlarge the combat simulation room so the kids and he would have enough space to practice superpowers and magic.
This was just the initial upgrade. Later, once his alchemy skills improved, the entire school would undergo further transformation.
Not only did he want to incorporate the magical features of Hogwarts Castle, but also make it mobile like the moving fortress in Fairy Tail, and add ultra-powerful attack magic arrays.
Eventually, if possible, he even planned to lift the entire school into the sky, creating a floating city. That would be even safer.
However, before he could reach the basement, his phone rang in his pocket.
"It's Black Widow."
Seeing the caller ID, he answered jokingly:
"Natasha, what is it? Considering leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. to join our school?"
"George, Director Fury is dead. S.H.I.E.L.D. is finished. We need your help!"
Natasha's exhausted voice came from the other end of the line.
George was stunned when he heard that:
"Nick Fury is dead? Are you sure?"
Nick Fury, that guy—he might not be great at many things, but his survival skills were top-notch.
Not only did he have Skrulls acting as decoys, but also had a powerful ally in Captain Marvel.
Honestly, even now, he wasn't sure he could defeat Captain Marvel.
One must remember, Captain Marvel could travel through space unaided and physically tear through the most advanced Kree and Thanos warships.
So when he heard of Fury's death, his first thought was that it was a fake death.
But Natasha's next words made him start to doubt.
"We were ambushed by a large number of Winter Soldiers from Hydra. Director Fury was shot through the chest by one of them and died on the spot.
Winter Soldiers are a group of emotionless killing machines created by Hydra using the serum. We previously thought there was only one, but it turns out there's a whole batch."
In the movie universe, there was only one Winter Soldier—Captain America's friend, Bucky.
Back then, after falling from the train, he was found by Hydra, injected with serum, modified and brainwashed, becoming one of Hydra's deadliest assassins. He even killed Iron Man's parents.
That incident led to the Avengers' Civil War.
"Could it be that the batch of Winter Soldiers from Hydra's base in Civil War was activated early?"
Suddenly, George recalled that besides Bucky, Hydra had created over thirty Winter Soldiers using their elite assassination squad. They were eventually killed in cryostasis by Helmut Zemo.
According to Bucky in the film, each of those thirty Winter Soldiers was fluent in over thirty languages and skilled in infiltration, assassination, disguise, and regime subversion—ghosts in the shadows.
If they acted together, they could topple a small country.
But this wasn't the movie universe—it was an unknown Marvel universe. And due to George's intervention, S.H.I.E.L.D. learned of Hydra's existence earlier and began a direct confrontation.
So it was entirely plausible that Hydra had activated those frozen Winter Soldiers early.
If Fury was caught off guard and killed, it wasn't impossible.
In some universes, not just Nick Fury, but Iron Man and Captain America had died too.
Besides, Captain America was now a teacher at George's school. Without his help, it was understandable that S.H.I.E.L.D. was losing to Hydra.
"After Nick Fury died, did his body change strangely—like turning completely green?"
"What do you mean, turning green?
George, I'm not joking.
S.H.I.E.L.D. has been completely crushed. Hydra's next moves might endanger the entire world.
They're preparing to launch the Helicarriers they took from S.H.I.E.L.D. and activate Project Insight."
Natasha's tone grew anxious. Nick Fury's death had clearly shaken her.
The government couldn't be relied on at all, and no one knew how many Hydra spies were still hidden. Now, the only one capable of stopping Hydra's Project Insight was George.
After all, the intel on Hydra came from George. Plus, Captain America was with him, and his school was full of powerful mutants with all kinds of abilities.
"Alright, where are you now? I'll come find you."
If it was a Skrull impersonating Fury, then the body would have reverted to Skrull form after death. Since that didn't happen, it was likely that it really was Nick Fury who died.
With Fury dead and S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed, if George didn't help, Hydra might just be able to overthrow the entire Earth and establish global domination.
Beings like Odin and the Ancient One wouldn't interfere in human civil wars.
He remembered that, indeed, there were some Marvel universes where Hydra ruled the world.
And George absolutely did not want to see that outcome. Hydra enforced absolute hegemony—as seen from their Project Insight.
What was Project Insight?
It used Dr. Zola's algorithm to predict everyone who could pose a future threat to Hydra. Then, three Helicarriers would take to the skies, sniping them from above—killing them before they could grow powerful.
In the future, everyone would have to obey Hydra unconditionally—or be eliminated.
So George and his Academy of Superpowers would have to submit to Hydra's rule to avoid being targeted.
But how could George ever obey Hydra?
That left only one option: to stop Hydra's plan and make them understand which people could be messed with—and which absolutely could not.
There was an unexpected matter today, so this update is even later than usual. Apologies!
