Shadows Of The Past

Chapter 9

Marcus POV

The shrill ringtone of my phone jerked me out of my thoughts and back to reality. I reached for my phone in my jacket.

" Burnley, this better be good." I said immediately I picked the call.

" I can't find Miss Miller." He said breathless like he had been running. "What do you mean you can't find her? Isn't she in the penthouse?"

"No sir, I have been waiting for her so that I could drive her back home and I haven't seen her and she isn't in the office."

I rolled my eyes frustrated and glanced at my wristwatch. It was almost eleven PM, where could she be? A surge of annoyance ran through me, I didn't have the time to be worrying about this. I had a business to run and an empire to build

" Don't worry Burnley, go home." I said before I hanged up.

" Turn the car around, St Caroline hospital." I said to my driver. She better be there.

I got to her mum's ward and heard giggles and laughing coming from the room. The door was slightly open so I could see Ana, I didn't want them to see me. I feel my lips curving into a smile as I watched them. They laughed and their bond was evidently showing something that could never exist in my family. We were always cold and distant to each other but played the happy and united family for the world to see. My parents were always more obsessed with social status and business dealing than being actual parents. I felt a pang of..... not exactly jealousy but wistfulness.

I got back to the penthouse and poured myself a drink while I waited for Ana to return. Few minutes later, the door bursted open.

" Where the fuck have you been Ana?" I asked in a calm tone.

" I don't think that's any of your business." She sassed before walking away not sparing me a glance. I stood right behind her as she took a bottle of water from the fridge making her bump into me when she turned. Her eyes darted around, looking everywhere except at me. She was definitely avoiding my piercing gaze and I could feel the tension in her body. I lowered my head dangerously close to her ear.

" As far as you're mine, it's always going to be my business." I whispered before walking away.

" I'm not some property you can own, Marcus!" She yelled her eyes filled with a spark of defiance in them.

" Well the contract says otherwise." I said as I put on my jacket.

" They're some clothes in your wardrobe, dress better tomorrow and be punctual."

" And if I don't."

" You don't want to find out." I said and walked out of the penthouse.

I went back to the office to do some more work as sleeping wasn't an option. As I walked into my office, I was greeted by the familiar sight of paper and files scattered across my desk. I sat down rubbing my temple as I tried to figure out where I had left off. I began to sift through the papers, my eyes scanning through the pages and my fingers flying across the keyboard typing out notes.

The shrill ringtone of my phone pierced the silence in the office. I jerked my head from my laptop and picked up my phone.

" Robert any news?" I asked as I leaned back on my chair.

" There's definitely a mole in your company."

" Who planted them?"

" Probably your biggest rival."

" Bloody Ben Jersey." I cursed under my breath.

" I still don't know who exactly is the mole or how much damage he has caused already but I suggest you should be careful."

" Thank you, Robert." I said before I hanged up.

I leaned forward, my eyes scanning through the papers on my desk with renewed urgency. A mole is in my company? It was unthinkable, I always ran a full background check on all my workers and partners. But Robert was the best in the business, and if he says there was a mole then there was definitely a mole. After hours of searching for even a proof or trail, I still couldn't find any.

I glanced at the clock, it was six thirty AM. Ana should be on her way to the office. I stood up from my desk stretching my arms over my head. I have been glued to my computer throughout the night, I needed a break. I walked over to a door that connected my office to a smaller co-joining room. It had a bedroom and a bathroom, i got it installed since I spent most of my night here.

I stood under the cold shower getting refreshed to start the day. I got dressed in a fresh suit. I was knotting my tie in my office when the door opened. Ana walked in with a cup of coffee and a file, I could feel her eyes on me.

" Good morning Mr Blinge."

" Ten minutes past seven, you're late Miss Miller." I said as I put on my suit.

" Did you sleep here?" I could hear concern laced in her voice.

" I am the CEO of this company I can do what I want." My eyes finally met with her. She was dressed in a black corporate fitted gown. It looked so good on her and it made her slender curve become more visible. I stared at her taking in all of her outfit.

" I'm just trying to be concerned."

" You shouldn't." I said tearing my eyes from off her. She was about to release another stream of words when a knock on the door interrupted her.

The door bursted open and the person that walked in made me to almost choke on my coffee.

Never in a thousand years did I think I would see her again.

Daisy Davis in flesh.
