The darkness was suffocating.
Marcus's breathing was sharp and fast as he spun around, trying to make sense of the void. The core chamber had been blindingly bright moments ago — now it was a black pit, broken only by the sound of the countdown's relentless tick.
06:45… 06:44…
"Marcus!" Emily's voice cracked through the dark.
"I'm here! Stay close!" he called back.
A noise to his right — footsteps. Fast, light.
"Harper?"
"Not me," Harper said from his left.
The Ghost.
Suddenly the air shifted — a rush of movement, and then a grunt. The sound of a struggle exploded from the blackness.
"Harper!"
"He's—agh!"
A sharp crack, and Harper's voice cut off.
"Harper!" Marcus moved toward the sound, but his foot met empty air — and he fell, landing hard on a metal platform. Pain blossomed through his side.
06:20… 06:19…
"Get up," he hissed to himself, pushing through the ache.
"He's taking us apart," Emily's voice was distant — moving.
Marcus forced himself toward her voice.
"You never understood," the Ghost's voice whispered through the dark, closer than it should have been. "This isn't about winning. It's about breaking."
A shot rang out — Emily's gun.
"Did I hit him?" she asked.
Silence answered.
"No," the Ghost whispered.
Then Marcus heard the whirring — a machine, powering up.
"No," he muttered. "He's activating the secondary system!"
The countdown accelerated.
06:00… 05:59…
"We need to stop him!" Emily shouted.
"Follow the sound!" Marcus urged.
The whirring grew louder — but so did the Ghost's laughter.
"You're too late," the Ghost said. "This system… it's not just going to destroy the facility. It's going to rewrite everything."
"What does that mean?!" Emily demanded.
"You'll see soon enough," the Ghost said. "If you live that long."
Then the floor shook.
"He's destabilizing the core," Marcus realized. "We have to get to the control panel — now!"
05:30… 05:29…
"I see light!" Emily called.
Marcus ran toward it — a faint glow in the distance.
But the Ghost was faster.
Suddenly, Marcus was hit — hard. He crashed against the ground.
"You don't get to win," the Ghost hissed.
Marcus lashed out blindly — connecting with a solid jaw. The Ghost reeled.
05:00… 04:59…
Emily reached the console.
"Marcus! Tell me what to do!"
"Disable the core stabilizer!" he shouted.
The Ghost was back on him — fists flying.
"You're not stopping this," the Ghost growled.
"We'll see about that," Marcus spat.
Emily's fingers flew over the keys.
But the screen flashed red.
OVERRIDE DENIED.
"It's not working!" Emily cried.
The Ghost laughed.
And the countdown kept falling.
