Remy looked at him, her gaze lingering on him for a moment before she finally smiled and said softly, "Deth, you came."
Though his expression remained icy, he nodded slightly at her. Ethan wondered in his mind, What sort of name is that? Death?
He heard it as DEATH, and his mind recoiled at the thought. 'What kind of person has a name like that?' he thought, feeling a shiver run down his spine.
Deth moved to scoop Remy gently from Ethan's arms but Ethan held her back firmly in his grasp. "Hello, I'm still here," he said, trying to assert himself.
Deth's gaze shifted to him, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Yes, I saw you. My offer still stands though. How about you dance with me instead and leave the girl alone?"
Ethan's eyes squinted in confusion. "Who are you?" he asked, but before he could get an answer, Sophia and Julian jumped into the conversation.
Sophia's voice seemed full of concern as she asked, "Remy, do you know this man? Is he your partner?"
"What–"
"You've found a partner? He is really handsome, I'm happy about that" Sophia didn't let Remy talk before she interrupted.
She looked like she was very happy and relieved as she said next with a smile, gazing at Remy's legs, her expression a mixture of pity and curiosity.
"I thought you wouldn't be..." She paused, looking like she was trying to find the right word not to sound rude.
"I was worried you wouldn't be able to find a partner, considering your... condition," Sophia said, her voice so soft and a little above a whisper.
"I had actually lined up some guys for you to go on blind dates with. Julian and I already decided to arrange some men for you after our wedding, so you could find someone special."
She smiled shyly and turned to Julian who was beside her "right hubby?"
Julian smiled, his eyes gleaming with condescension. "Yes, we just want what's best for you, Remy. And we're happy to help you find someone who can take care of you."
Remy's eyes narrowed, knowing the malice behind Sophia's concerned words.
Sophia placed her head on Julian's arm who in turn kissed her head and patted her. "I thought you might feel pressured or angry that I got married before you, despite you being the senior. But I just love Julian so much, and we couldn't wait to finally be together."
Julian smiled, "Don't worry, sweet heart. I'm sure your sister understands. You're a good person"
Remy's heart clenched even more.
Her stepmother, Helena, chimed in, her voice sounding anything but sincere. "Yes, you should be happy for your sister, Remy. We just want to make sure you're happy and settled. And we're willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. But, you wouldn't want to rush into anything, would you?"
Sophia's expression turned sugary sweet as she supported her mother, "That's right Remy, you shouldn't feel pressured. Don't rush into anything just because I'm already married. You should have patience, dear. You deserve someone who truly loves you. Don't grab some wild man just to feel among"
Sophia's words were like a slow-dripping poison, designed to make it seem like Remy was desperate to find a man and she should be grateful to them.
A few guests nodded in agreement, buying into Sophia's manipulative words.
One of the guests whispered, "Who is this man here anyway?" Another guest leaned in, whispering, "Is he reliable?"
Julian chimed in, "We don't know you, and you're not familiar with our Remy, are you?" His tone was condescending, and Remy's eyes flashed with annoyance.
Deth didn't bother to respond. He just shook his head. One of his men stepped forward instead, introducing him on his behalf, his voice low and even.
"This is Master Kaidën."
The name rang a bell. Everybody knew the Kaidën family - they were the epitome of power and wealth, the zenith of the upper society.
They were a family of moguls, with a business empire that had stood for decades, spanning real estate, finance, and industry. Their company, Dek Global Corp, was a household name, synonymous with success and prestige.
But who was this man? Nobody remembered the Kaidën family having a son like him. The only heir to the Kaidën fortune that everyone knew of was Kaida, the daughter of Master Kaidën.
She was a force to be reckoned with, known for her intelligence and prowess in business.
So where did this man come from? Was he an imposter, using the Kaidën name to gain power and influence?
Or was he somehow related to the family, a distant cousin or illegitimate son? The guests exchanged skeptical glances, unsure what to make of Deth's claim.
Remy's father, however, seemed to have been rooted to his spot ever since Deth stepped in, his eyes narrowing in a mixture of shock and alertness, 'how the hell did Remy get to know Deth?!'
He had been surprised by Deth's arrival, and his expression had turned ashen.
The talks continued, Deth looked like he was finally done listening to their jargon, his gaze swept the room, his eyes briefly scanning the noise makers around and lingering on Remy's family, a dark glint flashed in his hazel eyes, a hint of something sinister lurking beneath the surface, before settling back on Remy herself.
His expression slightly softened, but his jaw remained tight, a little subtle tension betraying his calm demeanor.
With a deliberate step forward, Deth moved to claim Remy. His movements were fluid and purposeful, his arm sliding to her waist to support her weight as he gently peeled her off Ethan's arms.
Ethan's eyes widened in surprise, his face reddening with anger as Deth swooped in and effortlessly lifted Remy out of his arms. "Hey, what the...?" he protested, his voice rising in indignation. "Who are you to just take her away from me?!"
Deth settled her back into her wheelchair, his hand lingering on her waist for a moment before he released her.
"I don't explain myself to fools" Deth finally said, his voice low and even, laced with arrogance, tossing out those words like a careless gauntlet.
The guests gasped in shocked surprise, their whispers and murmurs filling the air. Did he just refer to the Harrison family as fools?
The sheer audacity was mesmerizing. Only someone from the Kaidën family could get away with such a brazen insult.
The guests exchanged awestruck glances, their minds racing with the implications. Could he be...? Was he actually from the Kaidën family?
A hidden heir, perhaps? The possibility sent a thrill through the crowd, their curiosity piqued.
But Deth didn't care about their speculation or their opinions. With a cold smirk, he grasped the handles of Remy's wheelchair and began to push her away from the gathering.
He was already on his way, his long strides eating up the distance as he pushed Remy's wheelchair through the crowds. The guests parted before him, their faces a blur of shock and curiosity.
But they hadn't taken more than a few steps when Mr. Harrison, Remy's father, stepped forward, his face a little grave. "Stay away from her," he said, his voice firm but coated with a hint of desperation. "Remy, come with me, let's go back home."
Remy's gaze locked onto her father's, her eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and disdain. "Let go of me," she spat, her voice venomous as she wrenched her hand free from his grasp.
"Remy your fa–" Her step mom made to talk but Deth shot her a cold glance and she shut her mouth back up.
"Please, Deth," she said, her voice softening as she turned to him, "take me away from here."
Deth's gaze flicked to Remy's father, his eyes narrowing in a silent warning. "She doesn't want you, old man. Move away."
Something in Deth's eyes made Mr. Harrison shiver, and he took a step back, his face pale. Deth's smile widened, a cold, calculated smile that sent a shivers down the spines of those watching.
With a subtle nod, Deth turned the wheelchair and resumed rolling Remy away from the wedding ground, his two men falling into step behind them, their faces impassive and unyielding.
