Chapter 6

Jake had barely given Callie and Garrison a chance to exchange a few words before he made an excuse to go ask the doctor about medication.

I quickly grabbed him, making him sign a few documents - divorce papers I'd hastily had drawn up.

He thought they were just for buying a house or something similar, and signed without even looking, all while offering words of comfort.

"You don't need to go through all this trouble to ask me about buying whatever you like. When I get back, I'll give you a card with no spending limit as compensation."

After signing quickly, he affectionately patted my head and turned to leave.

I watched his retreating figure with a cold smirk. Now he can't even stand to stay for a minute. Do you really want Callie to live?

You want to compensate me, huh? Then you wouldn't have left us trapped in that fire back then. Who are you putting on this act of concern for now?

Before I could gather my thoughts, Jaxon burst in again, throwing a tattered rabbit onto the hospital bed.

"What an ugly rabbit. You wouldn't let me have it before, treating it like some precious treasure. Look how easily I've torn it up now."

Before I could react, he ran over and yanked the IV needle out of Callie's hand, then started picking at the exposed scars and even tried to press on the blood-soaked bandage.

My heart clenched tight as I quickly pushed Jaxon away, gently comforting the terrified Callie.Glaring at Jaxon, who I had pushed to the ground, my eyes finally recognized that stuffed rabbit. It was the doll I had once hand-sewn for Callie, her most precious bedtime companion.

But somehow, it had ended up in Jaxon's hands.

My blood boiling, I reached out to slap him, but Melody walked in and blocked me.

"What's the big deal? How dare you hit Jaxon? It's just playing around with someone who's about to die anyway. Why are you so protective? That doll is only precious to you two, it's worthless. You should know if our Jaxon wants it, Garrison would give it to him."

"Don't talk about that trash. Even if you wanted your kidney, Garrison would hand it over on a silver platter. You're nothing."

"A blind woman and a cripple, you're really dragging Garrison down. You think you're fit to be Mrs. Carlisle? Doesn't it break your heart that the wedding you begged for so long, I got so easily? But it's your own fault for being useless. What right do you have to compete with us?"

Jaxon got up, shoved me, and with his hands on his hips, he lifted his chin defiantly: "My daddy loves me the most. Who do you think you are? You dare hit me? Just wait, you'll be sorry!"I stumbled backward a few steps before regaining my balance. Jaxon was still unhappy, lunging at me with scissors in hand.

My anger reached its peak. I snatched the scissors away, but before I could react, Melody grabbed my hand and plunged them into her own stomach.

Blood instantly splattered everywhere. Her white dress was now soaked crimson, and I could feel warm liquid on my face.

The scissors clattered to the floor as a figure rushed forward to catch her falling body.

"Evelina, what are you doing? How could you be so thoughtless? I'm truly disappointed in you. How heartless!"

Looking at the blood on my hands and hearing those piercing words, the world seemed to freeze. This was how he saw me.
