Chapter 2

I waited from 4 PM in the afternoon until 10 PM at night, only to see Jade arrive arm-in-arm with Fletcher, playfully winking at me.

"Seraphina, let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend, Fletcher."

"Fletcher, this is my desk mate and good friend, Seraphina."

My heart, like a love letter in my pocket, was torn to shreds.

From the day they got together, I chose to let go.

I inherited the family business and moved south to make my way.

The next time I met Fletcher, it was as business partners.

After catching up, I learned that Fletcher had chosen to start his own business after his internship, while Jade had gotten an opportunity to study abroad.

Now, Jade is married overseas, and Fletcher's company is facing an economic crisis.

Under the double blow of career and emotional setbacks, he fell into depression.

I stood by Fletcher as he rebuilt his career and overcame his depression. Finally, he saw me for who I was and proposed.

With the divorce papers half-written, I closed my laptop and decided to talk to Fletcher again.

Early the next morning, I heard the sound of a sports car speeding away and frantically opened my eyes. I dialed Fletcher's number, but he wouldn't pick up.

Out of options, I called Fletcher's mother.

He was from a single-parent household and always listened to his mom.

I quickly packed up, grabbed the medical report, and rushed to the hospital with Fletcher's mother to stop the man about to sign.

"Think it through carefully. This is your only chance."

Jade lay on the operating table, slightly raising herself and lifting her hand. She called out weakly, "Fletcher, haven't you explained everything to Seraphina?"

Fletcher held Jade's hand, his face full of concern, and shot me an impatient glance.

He signed his name with a flourish and held it up to my face.

"Seraphina, you can't stop my decision."

People really do laugh when they're speechless.

I handed the medical report to Fletcher, the words "weak sperm" glaring at him in bold letters.

On the way here, I had already explained everything to Fletcher's mother.

As people reach middle age, some things become unavoidable.

Fletcher was busy with work and social obligations, smoking and drinking, staying up late for long periods, which led to him almost losing his ability to have children.

The sperm he froze ten years ago would be his only chance to have offspring. Fletcher's mother collapsed to the ground, crying out, "You foolish child! You can't sign that, you absolutely can't! If you sign it, our Frost family line will end!"

"Mom, for Jade's sake, I'm willing to do anything. Besides, Jade will bear children for me anyway."

Fletcher urged the doctor into the operating room, whispering in my ear as he left.

"Seraphina, once Jade comes out safe and sound, we'll get a divorce."

Fine, just fine.

My hands clenched into fists, trembling uncontrollably.

Fletcher's mother seemed to have a sudden realization, picking herself up from the floor.
