Chapter 9: The Shard of the Void

The first ingredient on our list was the shard of the Void. According to the scroll, it could only be found in the **Abyssal Caverns**, a dangerous dungeon filled with shadowy creatures and treacherous terrain. Naturally, Skully was thrilled.

*"Finally, a real adventure!"* he said, bouncing on my shoulder as we packed supplies for the journey. *"I was starting to think we'd spend the rest of our lives sneaking around libraries."*

"Don't get too excited," I warned. "The Abyssal Caverns are no joke. People have gone in and never come out."

Skully waved a bony hand dismissively. *"Those people didn't have me. We'll be fine, Master. Trust me."*

I wasn't sure if I trusted him, but we didn't have much of a choice. The Mark was already affecting Skully—his rune glowed brighter every day, and he occasionally muttered in his sleep, his voice echoing with an otherworldly tone. We had to act fast.

The journey to the caverns took two days. When we arrived, the entrance loomed before us like a gaping maw, its darkness swallowing the light. The air was cold and heavy, and the faint sound of whispers echoed from within.

"Ready?" I asked, gripping my staff tightly.

Skully hopped off my shoulder and landed on the ground, his rune glowing faintly. *"Born ready, Master. Let's do this."*

We stepped into the cavern, the darkness closing in around us. Skully's rune provided a faint light, but it only made the shadows seem deeper. The whispers grew louder, and I could feel eyes watching us from the darkness.

"Stay close," I muttered, my heart pounding.

We hadn't gone far when the first creature attacked—a shadowy figure with glowing red eyes and claws like daggers. It lunged at me, but Skully intercepted it, his bones glowing with golden light. He slammed into the creature with a bone-crunching impact, sending it sprawling.

*"That's right!"* Skully shouted, his voice echoing through the cavern. *"Who's next?"*

More creatures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glowing with malice. Skully and I fought side by side, his agility and my spells keeping them at bay. But the deeper we went, the stronger the creatures became.

Finally, we reached the heart of the cavern—a massive chamber filled with swirling shadows. At its center was a pedestal, and on that pedestal was the shard of the Void. It was a small, jagged crystal, pulsing with dark energy.

"There it is," I said, stepping forward.

But before I could reach it, a massive shadowy figure rose from the ground, its form shifting and twisting like smoke. It let out a deafening roar, and the cavern shook.

*"Uh, Master?"* Skully said, his voice trembling. *"I think we've got company."*
