Chapter 16: A New Threat

We returned to the academy to find it in chaos. Students and professors were running through the halls, their faces pale with fear. The air was thick with tension, and I could hear shouts echoing from the courtyard.

"What's going on?" I asked, grabbing a passing student by the arm.

"It's the Ancient One!" the student replied, his voice trembling. "Its followers are here! They're attacking the academy!"

My heart sank. The Ancient One wasn't done with us—not yet.

"Skully, we need to get to the courtyard," I said, my voice urgent.

*"On it, Master,"* Skully replied, his rune glowing brightly. *"Let's show them what we're made of."*

We ran to the courtyard, where a battle was already underway. The followers of the Ancient One were shadowy figures, their forms shifting and twisting like smoke. They wielded dark magic, their spells tearing through the academy's defenses.

Professor Grimshaw was at the front lines, his staff glowing with powerful spells. He turned to us as we approached, his expression grim.

"Evan, Skully—thank the stars you're here," he said. "We need all the help we can get."

"What happened?" I asked, casting a barrier spell to protect us from a stray blast of dark energy.

"The Ancient One's followers are after Skully," Professor Grimshaw explained. "They believe he's the key to resurrecting their master."

*"Resurrecting the Ancient One?"* Skully repeated, his eye sockets widening. *"But we just broke the Mark!"*

"The Mark was only part of it," Professor Grimshaw said. "The Ancient One's power is tied to its followers. If they capture Skully, they can use his energy to bring their master back."

I clenched my fists, my resolve hardening. "We're not letting that happen."

Skully nodded, his rune glowing brighter. *"Let's take them down, Master. Together."*

We joined the battle, our combined strength turning the tide. Skully's new rune gave him incredible power, his golden energy dispersing the shadowy figures with ease. I focused on supporting him, casting spells to enhance his abilities and protect him from harm.

But the followers of the Ancient One were relentless. They kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless. As the battle raged on, I began to wonder if we could hold them off.

"We need a plan," I said, dodging a blast of dark energy. "We can't keep this up forever."

*"I've got an idea,"* Skully replied, his voice determined. *"But it's risky."*

"What is it?" I asked.

*"We need to disrupt their connection to the Ancient One,"* Skully explained. *"If we can sever their link, they'll lose their power."*

"And how do we do that?" I asked.

Skully grinned, his eye sockets glowing with mischief. *"We hit them where it hurts. Follow me!"*
