SOPHIA'S POV
"See you later, Carol." I said, giving her a tight hug before stepping out of the car. I watched as she drove off, her headlights disappearing into the distance.
The street was eerily quiet, with only the occasional chirping of crickets breaking the silence. The air was cool, sending shivers down my spine, though I wasn’t sure if it was the cold or the thoughts racing through my mind. I wrapped my arms around myself, swallowing the lump forming in my throat.
It was almost midnight. Garry is probably asleep by now.
I took a deep breath before unlocking the front door. The house was dark except for the faint glow coming from the living room. My stomach tightened. I stepped inside and slipped off my sneakers, my fingers trembling slightly. Please let him be asleep. Please don’t ask me anything.
But as I turned my head, my heart sank.
There he was.
