I shifted beneath the thick comforter, my body heavy and throbbing with a dull ache that pulsed through my limbs. The moment I opened my eyes, I winced. A piercing brightness from the ceiling light stabbed at my skull, worsening the pounding headache that had taken residence there. I blinked, trying to adjust, my lids fluttering like wings against the intrusive glare.

The pain, both physical and emotional, settled in as if it had always belonged. And then, as if the floodgates of memory had been forced open, everything rushed back. The car. The road. The impact. The deafening sound of crunching metal and shattering glass. The weightless moment of the car rolling, my body being tossed like a rag doll, and the sudden, brutal halt. The blood. The silhouette—a man, just a blur before the darkness had consumed me.
