The weight of the moment pressed on me, and for a split second, I thought I might collapse. Matteo lay there, eyes barely open, breathing shallow and labored. His every movement was a struggle, and it took everything in me to suppress the overwhelming urge to rush to his side, to beg Aleksandr to let him go. But I couldn’t afford to show weakness—not now, not in front of him.

I stood there for a moment, staring at Matteo as the machines continued their steady beeping, the sound filling the silence that had settled between Aleksandr and me. I felt the heat of his gaze on my back as I turned around slowly to face him.

“So, what is it that you want from me, Aleksandr?” My voice was quieter than I’d intended, but I knew that I needed to keep my calm. I couldn’t let him see the storm inside me.
