The Year of Broken Gates – The Siege of Karak Dran
In the twilight years of the dwarven empire, when the once-mighty holds stood fractured and divided, a new storm gathered on the horizon. To the west, the Kingdom of Vandraal had risen from scattered human fiefdoms, forged in conquest and ambition. Under King Edric the Conqueror, their sights turned toward the riches of the dwarves, believing the weakened holds to be ripe for plunder.
The March of the Vandraali Host
The armies of Vandraal were unlike any force the dwarves had faced before. They did not come as disorganized raiders or scattered warbands but as a disciplined legion, wielding weapons of iron and fire, led by battle-mages schooled in elven sorcery.
The Grand Host of Vandraal numbered over 50,000 warriors, including cavalry, siege engineers, and spellcasters.Their war machines, crafted by human and elven hands, were capable of hurling boulders and searing flames over the high walls of the dwarven keeps. At their head rode King Edric, clad in black steel, wielding the Blade of Aelthorn, an enchanted sword said to have been reforged in dragon's fire.
Their destination was Karak Dran, the Fortress of Shields, the heart of dwarven industry and the largest mithril mine in all Eldoria.
The Fortress of Shields – Karak Dran
Karak Dran was an unassailable bastion, built deep into the mountains, its defenses designed to repel endless sieges.
The Titan's Teeth, a massive gate of black iron and enchanted stone, had never been breached. It was the pride of the Iron Vanguard, a symbol of dwarven defiance. The Deep Wells of Dran provided an endless supply of fresh water, ensuring that a siege could last for years without the defenders faltering.Thousands of warriors stood ready, commanded by Keeplord Thrain Gemforge, a master strategist whose ancestors had repelled countless invasions.
But even Karak Dran was not what it once was. The War of the Molten Throne had drained their numbers, and the once-unified dwarven armies were divided between rival holds. The call for reinforcements went unanswered.
The dwarves would stand alone.
The Siege Begins
On the First Day of Fire, the horns of Vandraal echoed through the mountain passes, and the war began.
Siege engines rumbled forward, launching stones the size of dwarves at the high walls.Battle-mages conjured storms of fire, seeking to burn the fortifications from within.Ladders and siege towers were raised against the walls, while human warriors surged forward like a tide of steel.
For weeks, the Iron Vanguard held firm, their shields locked, their axes cutting down any who dared to breach the walls. The Molten Cannons of Dran, ancient dwarven weapons of fire and steam, sent torrents of liquid steel pouring onto the invaders.
But King Edric had one final weapon.
On the Night of the Shattered Gate, the Vandraali unleashed their greatest war-beast—a monstrous Siege Golem, crafted of iron and magic, taller than the gates themselves.
The creature waded through the battlefield, shrugging off arrows and fire. With one mighty strike, it shattered the Titan's Teeth, breaking through the unbreakable gates. The first human warriors in history set foot inside Karak Dran, and the true battle began.
The Battle Beneath the Mountain
As the gates fell, fighting spilled into the lower halls, where the dwarves made their final stand.
The Hall of the Ancestral Forge, once a place of sacred craft, became a battlefield drenched in blood. The Mithril Mines became killing grounds, where dwarves collapsed tunnels to bury their foes.Keeplord Thrain Gemforge, wielding the hammer of his ancestors, led a counterattack, fighting through the broken gates and straight into the heart of the enemy.
For three days and nights, the battle raged, axe against sword, shield against spear.
The Turning of the Tide
When hope seemed lost, the sky itself cracked with thunder. From the east, a new force arrived—the reinforcements from Kaz'Dumor.
Led by High King Torgrin Duradin, the warriors of the Molten Throne charged into the Vandraali flanks.Skyforged Cannons rained fire from the cliffs, shattering the Siege Golem and driving the invaders back. The Runepriests of Ul'Zanar, long thought vanished, returned to the battlefield, weaving magic of fire and stone, breaking the siege at last.
With their siege weapons destroyed and their armies broken, King Edric was forced to retreat, his dream of dwarven submission crushed.
The Aftermath – A Pyrrhic Victory
Though the dwarves had won the battle, the war had cost them dearly.
Karak Dran stood, but its gates were broken, its halls stained with the blood of thousands. The Molten Throne's armies had saved the day, but the High King knew that this was only the beginning—the humans had tested dwarven might, and they would return. The dwarves could no longer afford their isolation—for the first time in centuries, they needed allies.
It was in the ashes of Karak Dran that the first true Dwarven-Elven Accord was signed, an agreement that would change the course of history.
The world had seen the War of Stone and Sky. And though the dwarves had endured, they knew—
The next war would not be so easily won.
Legacy of the War
The War of Stone and Sky marked the dawn of a new age for the dwarves.
The Holds Were Forced to Unite – No longer could each keep stand alone; the dwarves had to rebuild as a people. The Elven Alliance Was Forged – The elves, seeing the power of the humans, chose to stand with the dwarves rather than against them. The Rise of Vandraal – Though defeated, King Edric's dream did not die. The humans had tested dwarven steel and would one day return.
And so, the Second Great War ended.
But the storm was not yet over.
For in the darkness beneath the mountains, the Fireborn watched, waiting. And in the human lands, a new king would rise, one even more ambitious than Edric.
The future of the dwarves remained uncertain.
But one thing was clear—
The world would never be the same again.
