The Breaking Point

The air inside the factory was thick with tension. Lian could feel it pressing against her skin as she moved through the halls. Every glance, every whispered conversation it all felt heavier than before.

It had been three days since the food theft incident, and though no one had broken the rules again, trust was fragile. The factory was a pressure cooker, ready to explode.

And Shen Jiao knew it.

An Unwanted Meeting

"You're making waves, Lian," Jiao said, leaning back in his chair.

Lian stood in front of him, arms crossed. She didn't like being summoned like this.

"I'm keeping things under control," she replied.

Jiao chuckled. "Are you?" He gestured to the factory floor below, where their people moved about. "The newcomers still look at you first. Even some of my own men are starting to listen when you speak."

Lian's eyes narrowed. "Is that a problem?"

Jiao tilted his head. "Only if you make it one."

She held his gaze. She knew what he was doing reminding her that she was still in his territory. But she wasn't going to back down.

"I just want us to survive," she said finally.

Jiao smirked. "Then let's make sure we're on the same side."

Lian turned and walked away, her mind already racing.

She had just been warned.

Pressure from Within

Back in their sleeping quarters, Chen was cleaning his gun when she walked in.

"You talked to Jiao," he said without looking up.

Lian sighed. "He's watching me."

Chen set his gun down. "Of course he is. You're gaining influence."

"That's not my goal."

"Doesn't matter. It's happening."

Lian sat beside him. "We need to be careful."

He nodded. "Then let's prepare."

They didn't need to say it out loud they were already planning their exit.

The First Signs of Change

That night, Lian woke to a sharp pain in her head.

At first, she thought it was just a headache. But then she felt it something shifting in the air.

She sat up, heart pounding.

"Chen," she whispered, shaking his shoulder.

He was already awake. "I feel it too."

They both turned toward the factory walls, sensing something beyond them.

Something unnatural.

---

A Sudden Attack

The alarms blared.

Lian and Chen were already on their feet, weapons in hand, as people scrambled outside.

Shen Jiao was shouting orders. "South fence! Now!"

They ran.

The sight that greeted them sent a chill down Lian's spine.

A man was on the ground, convulsing. His skin was pale, veins darkening. He was turning.

The infection had begun.

People backed away in horror.

Lian grabbed Chen's arm. "We have to contain this."

But before they could act, the man's body jerked and then he moved.

Faster than he should have.

---

The First Kill

The infected man lunged at the nearest person, his strength unnatural.

A gunshot rang out Chen had fired, hitting the infected in the chest. But it didn't stop him.

Lian didn't hesitate. She moved, her knife flashing as she drove it through the infected's skull.

The body dropped.

Silence fell.

Lian turned to Jiao. "Burn the body. Immediately."

Jiao stared at her. "How did you"

"No time," Chen interrupted. "More could be out there."

Jiao snapped out of his shock. "You heard them! Move!"

The factory erupted into motion.

Lian wiped her blade, her mind racing.

The apocalypse had started early.

And now, everything would change.
