Chapter 12: The Point of No Return
The smell of burning flesh filled the air.
Lian stood near the fire pit, watching the infected man's body turn to ash. The flames crackled, casting long shadows against the factory walls. The others watched in uneasy silence.
Shen Jiao's men stood guard, their hands tight on their weapons. The survivors, especially the newcomers, whispered among themselves. Fear had taken root.
The apocalypse had begun.

A Fractured Group
"We need to talk," Jiao said, his voice low.
Lian followed him into the main office, where Chen and Luo were already waiting.
Jiao crossed his arms. "You knew."
Lian met his gaze without flinching. "We suspected something was coming."
Jiao exhaled sharply. "And you didn't say anything?"
"You wouldn't have believed us," Chen said calmly.
Jiao's jaw tightened. "We lost a man today. If this infection spreads, we lose everything."
Lian nodded. "That's why we need to act now."
Luo, one of Jiao's most trusted men, frowned. "What do you suggest?"
Lian's expression was grim. "Quarantine. Anyone showing symptoms needs to be isolated immediately."
Jiao's eyes darkened. "You're asking me to turn against my own people."
"I'm asking you to keep them alive," Lian corrected.
A long silence stretched between them. Then, finally, Jiao nodded.
"Fine," he said. "But if this gets worse, we're cutting off anyone who's infected. No exceptions."
Lian didn't argue. In her past life, hesitation had killed more people than cruelty ever had.

The First Symptoms
By morning, three more people were sick.
Lian and Chen stood outside the makeshift quarantine room, listening to the ragged breathing inside.
"They're not turning yet," Chen said.
"Yet," Lian echoed.
A woman sobbed nearby. One of the sick men was her husband.
Lian clenched her jaw. This is how it starts.
Jiao approached. "We can't wait too long," he muttered. "If they change…"
Lian tightened her grip on her knife. "Then we do what we have to."
Jiao studied her. "You're colder than I expected."
Lian didn't respond. She didn't need to.
She had already seen how this story ended.

An Unwanted Visitor
That night, Lian and Chen were discussing their escape plan when a knock came at their door.
It was Luo. His expression was tense.
"You need to come with me," he said.
Lian exchanged a glance with Chen before following him.
Luo led them to the factory's outer gates, where a group of people stood in the darkness. They were armed.
Their leader, a man with a cruel smirk, stepped forward. "Heard you've got supplies," he said. "We'd like to take some off your hands."
Lian's stomach dropped. Scavengers.
Jiao appeared beside them. "This is our territory," he said coldly. "Move along."
The man laughed. "Oh? And if we don't?"
Jiao's hand rested on his gun. "Then you won't be walking away."
Tension crackled in the air. Lian could already see how this would end.
Blood was about to be spilled.
And this time, there would be no going back.
