Shin sat alone in his quarters, staring at his trembling hands. The flickering candlelight cast long shadows across the wooden walls, but his mind was elsewhere. The words of the hooded stranger echoed in his head.
"The Void calls to you."
What did that even mean? He clenched his fists, the memory of that dark energy still fresh. The samurai had been wary of him ever since. They avoided his gaze, whispered behind his back. Even his master had looked at him with something akin to fear.
A knock at the door snapped him from his thoughts. He stood and opened it to find Master Kurogane, his mentor, staring at him with a grave expression. The old warrior stepped inside without a word.
"You felt it, didn't you?" Kurogane asked, voice low.
Shin hesitated before nodding. "I don't know what it was. It wasn't chakra. It was... something else."
Kurogane's eyes darkened. "The Void. I prayed this day would never come."
Shin's breath hitched. "You know about it?"
The master exhaled deeply. "Long ago, before the time of the Great Nations, there were warriors who wielded a force beyond chakra. It was neither yin nor yang, neither light nor dark. It was nothingness given form."
Shin's heart pounded. "And you think... I have this power?"
"I don't think, Shin. I know." Kurogane turned toward the door. "Pack your things. You must leave before dawn. If the Daimyō learns of this, you will not be given the chance to understand it. You will be executed."
Shin stiffened. "Executed? Why?"
Kurogane's gaze was heavy. "Because power like yours is feared. The world does not understand the Void. And what it does not understand, it destroys."
Shin's mind raced. He had trained his whole life to become a warrior of the Land of Iron, to uphold its traditions. But now, he was being cast out like a criminal?
"Where am I supposed to go?"
Kurogane hesitated before answering. "The Shinobi Nations. There, you may find answers. But be warned—those who seek power will come for you. The Akatsuki, the Ōtsutsuki… even Konoha may not be a safe haven."
Shin felt the weight of the world pressing down on him. He had no choice. He would leave. Find his own path. Discover what this Void truly was.
Before he could speak, a distant explosion shook the ground. Alarm bells rang through the fortress. Kurogane's eyes widened. "They've come for you already."
Shin grabbed his katana and sprinted out of the room, Kurogane close behind. The once-peaceful village was in chaos. Flames erupted from the eastern walls, and masked figures moved like ghosts through the mist.
The attackers wore no headbands, their movements precise and lethal. Shin saw samurai fall around him, cut down before they could react. These were no ordinary mercenaries. These were assassins sent to erase him.
One of them lunged at him, twin daggers gleaming in the firelight. Shin barely managed to deflect the strike, twisting to counter. Their blades clashed, sparks flying. His opponent was fast, unnaturally so.
"They know about the Void," Shin realized. "They came prepared."
He struck forward, but the assassin dodged effortlessly. Before he could react, another appeared behind him. A blade aimed for his neck.
A burst of energy surged from his body. The world twisted. The assassin's attack missed entirely, as if Shin had moved without moving. The Void pulsed through him.
The masked attacker hesitated. That was all Shin needed. He drove his katana through their chest. The other assassins stopped, as if sensing something unnatural.
Kurogane landed beside him, his own blade dripping with blood. "We need to leave. Now."
Shin nodded. The fight wasn't over, but if they stayed, they would be overwhelmed. He turned and ran, dodging through the battlefield, the sound of war ringing in his ears.
As he reached the edge of the village, he stopped. A single figure stood in his path.
The hooded man from before.
"You again..." Shin growled, gripping his sword tighter.
The man chuckled. "You've already seen what happens when you resist. Why not embrace it? Come with me, and I will show you what the Void truly is."
Shin took a step forward. Then another.
Kurogane's voice stopped him. "Shin! Don't listen to him!"
He turned to his master, then back to the hooded man. His path was uncertain. But one thing was clear.
The Void had already chosen him.
And his journey was only beginning.
