Shin Noragetsu emerged from the trial chamber, his body trembling from exhaustion. The whispers of the void still echoed faintly in his mind, lingering like a ghostly presence. He took a slow, measured breath, trying to steady himself. The cavernous ruins that had once felt oppressive now seemed eerily silent, as if they were waiting, watching.
He flexed his fingers, feeling the faint pulse of abyssal energy coursing beneath his skin. The power was still foreign to him—like an untamed beast lurking beneath the surface. He had passed the trial, but at what cost? The visions, the voices… they were not merely illusions. They had shown him something real. Something inevitable.
A gust of wind rustled through the ancient ruins, carrying with it the scent of damp stone and old blood. His mind snapped back to the present. He was not alone.
"You're still standing. Impressive."
Shin turned sharply, his katana half-drawn before he even registered the source of the voice. A lone figure stood at the edge of the ruin's entrance, arms crossed.
Rei.
The older swordsman regarded him with an amused smirk, though there was a glint of something else in his eyes—curiosity, perhaps even concern.
"Looks like the void didn't swallow you whole," Rei mused. "I was starting to think I'd have to drag your unconscious body out of there."
Shin exhaled and sheathed his blade. "I handled it."
Rei stepped closer, his gaze sharp as he studied Shin. "Did you now? Because you don't look like someone who just 'handled' something. You look like someone who barely crawled out of a nightmare."
Shin clenched his jaw. Rei wasn't wrong. But he wasn't about to admit that, either.
"The trial showed me things," he said finally. "Things I wasn't ready to see."
Rei's smirk faded. "The void has a way of doing that."
Shin hesitated before speaking again. "It showed me Tenka."
Rei's expression darkened instantly. His normally relaxed posture stiffened, and the amusement in his eyes vanished. "What did you see?"
Shin exhaled slowly. "A vision. A glimpse of him standing at the center of the abyss. It felt… real. Like he was watching me."
Rei was silent for a long moment before he finally muttered, "That's not a good sign."
Shin didn't need to be told that.
Rei sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Well, looks like things are about to get worse." He glanced back toward the ruined temple entrance. "But at least we have our answer. The void recognizes you now. Whether that's a blessing or a curse remains to be seen."
Shin frowned. "You knew this would happen."
Rei shrugged. "I suspected."
Shin narrowed his eyes. "And you didn't warn me?"
Rei's smirk returned, though it was laced with something colder this time. "Would it have changed anything?"
Shin didn't answer.
Rei chuckled. "Thought so." He turned away, motioning for Shin to follow. "Come on. We've got a long way back to the village, and you look like you could use some rest."
Shin hesitated for only a moment before falling into step beside him.
But as they walked, one thought lingered in his mind.
If Tenka had truly seen him through the void… then the real battle had only just begun.
