The journey back to the village was uneventful, yet the tension between Shin and Rei lingered like an unspoken truth. The cool night air did little to ease the unease settling in Shin's chest. The ruins of the abyssal temple were now behind him, but the weight of what had transpired clung to his very being.
Rei walked ahead, his usual smirk absent, replaced by a brooding silence. Shin, for his part, was lost in thought. The trial had changed something within him—not just his power, but his very perception of the world. The void had whispered secrets into his mind, and though he had emerged victorious, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had been marked.
As they approached the outskirts of the village, Rei finally broke the silence.
"You're different now," he said, not bothering to look back.
Shin tensed. "I passed the trial. Of course, I'd be different."
Rei shook his head. "Not just that. Something about you feels… off."
Shin remained silent. He wasn't sure how to explain it. The void was still with him, a presence lurking beneath his skin, whispering in the edges of his consciousness. It wasn't something he could simply brush aside.
They entered the village, its streets quieter than usual. The lights from the homes flickered against the darkness, casting long shadows across the ground. A few shinobi on patrol glanced their way but said nothing. The tension in the air was palpable.
Something was wrong.
Rei seemed to sense it too. His hand casually rested on the hilt of his blade as he scanned the area. "This isn't right," he muttered.
Shin's grip tightened. He had felt it the moment they crossed the village threshold. It was faint, but unmistakable—a lingering presence, like the void itself had touched this place.
Then came the voice.
"You've returned sooner than expected."
Shin and Rei both turned sharply.
A figure emerged from the shadows, his form barely illuminated by the lantern light. His long cloak draped over his frame, and his silver hair shimmered under the moonlight. But it was his eyes that struck Shin the most—cold, calculating, and eerily familiar.
Rei's fingers twitched near his sword. "I didn't expect to see you here."
The man smirked. "I imagine you didn't."
Shin frowned. "Who is he?"
Rei hesitated before answering. "Hikaru… an old acquaintance."
"That's one way to put it," Hikaru said, stepping closer. His gaze landed on Shin. "You've been playing in dangerous places, boy. The void lingers on you like a second skin."
Shin stiffened. "And what do you know about the void?"
Hikaru chuckled. "More than you'd like."
Rei exhaled through his nose. "Cut to the chase. Why are you here?"
Hikaru's smirk remained, but his tone darkened. "Because I'm not the only one who noticed the shift." His eyes locked onto Shin. "You felt it, didn't you? The moment you stepped out of that ruin, something stirred. Something is coming."
Shin clenched his jaw. He had felt it. The moment he left the temple, there had been a pull—like the abyss itself had shifted.
"What do you know?" Shin asked.
Hikaru tilted his head. "Enough to warn you that you may have woken something best left undisturbed."
Rei exhaled sharply. "You always talk in riddles. If you have something to say, say it."
Hikaru's smirk faded. "Fine. Tenka knows."
Silence.
Shin's stomach twisted.
Hikaru continued, his voice lower now. "Your little trial wasn't just some ancient test. It was a beacon. And Tenka saw the light."
Shin's hands clenched into fists. "Then he's coming for me."
Hikaru nodded. "And sooner than you think."
Rei cursed under his breath. "We don't have time for this."
Hikaru's gaze lingered on Shin. "Then you better be ready, Phantom Swordsman. Because the abyss doesn't let go easily."
With that, he turned and disappeared into the night, leaving Shin with the chilling realization—his fight was just beginning.
