The night was restless. Clouds thickened over the village, swallowing the moonlight and leaving only an eerie darkness in its wake. The weight of the impending storm bore down on Shin's shoulders, a sensation he could no longer ignore. He stood atop the village's outer wall, his sharp eyes scanning the distant landscape.
Somewhere beyond those hills, beyond the rivers that carved through the land, Tenka was waiting. The Void Cult had already begun its march, and Shin knew they wouldn't stop until their purpose was fulfilled.
Footsteps behind him signaled Kai's arrival. The strategist stood beside him, his expression unreadable. "It's quiet," Kai murmured.
"Too quiet," Shin replied, his voice steady. "It feels like we're running out of time."
Kai nodded, his gaze fixated on the distant shadows. "The Void Cult doesn't act without purpose. If Tenka wanted us dead, he would've sent an army. But he's holding back."
Shin exhaled sharply. "That means he's planning something bigger."
Kai crossed his arms. "If we're going to move first, we need to be smart about it. Rushing into unknown territory will get us all killed."
"I know." Shin's fingers tightened around the hilt of his sword. "That's why I'm going alone."
Kai's head snapped toward him. "No."
Shin turned to face him. "I can't afford to drag you all into this."
"You think you can take on the Void Cult by yourself?" Kai's voice was unusually sharp. "That's not strategy, Shin. That's suicide."
Shin met his gaze evenly. "This is something I have to do."
Kai's eyes darkened. "Rei will never agree to this."
Shin exhaled, his expression unwavering. "He doesn't have to."
A heavy silence passed between them before Kai finally sighed. "You're as reckless as ever."
Shin smirked faintly. "You wouldn't follow someone who wasn't."
Kai shook his head. "That's not the point."
Before either of them could say another word, a sudden shift in the air sent a shiver down their spines. The shadows stretched unnaturally, twisting as if alive.
Then came the whisper.
Shin immediately unsheathed his blade, his instincts screaming at him. Kai tensed, his hand moving to his kunai.
A figure emerged from the darkness. Cloaked in a flowing black robe adorned with strange markings, his presence alone felt like a tear in reality. His face was hidden beneath a deep hood, but Shin didn't need to see his eyes to know the truth.
This was no ordinary shinobi.
"You are… the chosen," the figure murmured, his voice layered with something unnatural, as if multiple voices spoke at once.
Shin raised his sword. "And you are?"
The figure didn't move. "A messenger of the abyss."
Kai shifted slightly, positioning himself for a counterattack. "What do you want?"
The figure tilted his head. "To deliver a promise."
Shin remained silent, his grip steady.
The air around them seemed to thrum with invisible energy, distorting the space between them. The figure raised a hand, and from his palm, a black flame flickered to life. It wasn't fire in the traditional sense—it didn't radiate heat. Instead, it devoured the very light around it.
"The abyss beckons," the figure whispered. "And soon, the world will listen."
Then, without warning, the flame surged forward.
Shin barely had time to react before the tendrils of darkness lashed out. He swung his sword, slicing through the black fire, but instead of dispersing, it clung to the blade, creeping toward his hand.
Kai threw a kunai infused with wind chakra, but the moment it struck the figure, it simply vanished—swallowed by the abyssal energy.
"Tch." Kai gritted his teeth.
Shin didn't hesitate. He activated his Void Release, allowing the darkness within him to rise. The conflicting energies clashed violently, sending waves of force through the air. The entire village trembled at the impact.
The figure took a step forward. "You resist the inevitable."
Shin's eyes sharpened. "I forge my own path."
With that, he launched forward. The moment his blade connected with the figure's form, the shadows around them erupted.
The next thing Shin knew, he was no longer in the village.
Darkness.
The world around him had shifted entirely. No sky, no ground—just an endless void stretching in all directions.
Shin steadied himself, adjusting to the strange reality. This wasn't an illusion—it was something far worse.
"You stand at the edge of the abyss," the figure's voice echoed from all directions. "Here, your will means nothing."
Shin exhaled, centering himself. "Then I'll make it mean something."
The shadows twisted, forming countless arms that reached for him. Shin moved, slicing through them with precise strikes. The abyss tried to consume him, but he refused to yield.
Then, he saw it—a gateway in the distance, pulsing with unfamiliar energy.
Shin sprinted toward it, dodging the shifting shadows. He could feel something beyond it, something powerful.
The figure appeared in front of him once more. "You cannot escape the void."
Shin smirked. "I don't intend to escape."
He thrust his hand forward, summoning his own void energy. The moment his power met the abyss, reality fractured.
The gateway shattered.
Light flooded his vision.
Shin gasped as he was yanked back into the real world. He stumbled slightly, his breath heavy. Kai caught him before he could collapse.
"What the hell just happened?" Kai demanded.
Shin wiped the sweat from his forehead. "He tried to pull me into the void."
Kai looked around. The figure was gone—no trace of him remained.
Rei suddenly appeared, his sword drawn. "What the hell was that explosion?"
Shin exhaled. "A warning."
Rei narrowed his eyes. "From who?"
Shin turned toward the distant horizon. The storm was closer now, its presence undeniable.
"Tenka."
For the first time, Rei's cocky smirk faded.
Kai clenched his fists. "Then we don't have much time."
Shin nodded. "No, we don't."
The war had begun.
