The night air was thick with tension, a heavy stillness that made even the wind hesitate. Shin stood at the village outskirts, his senses sharp, his instincts screaming at him. The battle with the mysterious figure had shaken him more than he cared to admit. Not because he had struggled—but because he had almost lost himself to the void.
He clenched his fists, his mind replaying the moment he had been dragged into that endless abyss. That place… it was more than just darkness. It was alive, shifting, whispering. The void had called to him, urging him to surrender.
But he hadn't.
He exhaled slowly, trying to push away the lingering sensation of emptiness. There was no time for doubt. The Void Cult was already on the move, and Tenka wouldn't wait forever.
Footsteps approached.
"Still brooding?" Kai's voice was light, but Shin could hear the underlying concern.
Shin didn't turn. "Just thinking."
Kai crossed his arms. "You nearly vanished into nothingness, Shin. Anyone would need a moment to process that."
Shin sighed. "It's not just that. I felt something… deeper. Like the void itself was watching me."
Kai frowned. "You mean Tenka?"
"No," Shin said quietly. "Something older."
The silence stretched between them. Finally, Kai spoke, his tone firm. "Whatever it was, we'll deal with it later. Right now, Rei's gathering the others. We need a plan."
Shin nodded. "Let's go."
The war council had gathered in a small underground chamber beneath the village. A single lantern flickered in the center of the table, casting long shadows against the stone walls.
Rei sat at the head, his usual smirk absent. His expression was grim, his fingers tapping impatiently against the wood. Beside him sat Aiko, her green eyes narrowed in thought. Across from her, Daichi adjusted the straps on his armor, his jaw clenched.
"We need to move," Rei said, breaking the silence. "We can't just wait for Tenka to strike first."
Daichi grunted. "Agreed. But we don't know where they'll hit next."
Aiko placed a map on the table. "Based on recent movements, their forces are gathering near the Valley of Ash. If they attack, it'll be from there."
Kai leaned forward. "That valley is a death trap. The cliffs alone make it impossible to retreat if things go south."
Rei smirked, but there was no humor in his eyes. "Then we don't retreat."
Shin studied the map. The Valley of Ash was a desolate wasteland, the remnants of a battlefield from an ancient war. The land itself was scarred, blackened by centuries of conflict. It was the perfect place for an ambush.
"If we can get there first, we might have an advantage," Shin said.
Aiko nodded. "There's an abandoned outpost near the valley entrance. If we secure it, we'll have the high ground."
Rei slammed his fist on the table. "Then it's settled. We move at dawn."
The journey to the Valley of Ash was long and grueling. The air grew colder with each step, the ground shifting from fertile soil to cracked, lifeless stone. By the time they reached the outpost, the sun was beginning to set, casting an eerie glow over the wasteland.
Shin stood at the edge of the cliff, his gaze sweeping over the valley below. The remnants of old battles lay scattered across the ground—broken weapons, shattered armor, and bones long turned to dust.
"This place feels… wrong," Aiko muttered.
Daichi grunted. "It's cursed, that's for sure."
Kai adjusted his kunai pouch. "Then let's make sure we don't end up like them."
Rei unsheathed his sword. "Eyes sharp. They'll be here soon."
The air grew heavier. The wind stopped.
And then, the shadows moved.
From the darkness, figures emerged—cloaked in void energy, their forms shifting unnaturally. Their eyes glowed with an eerie light, hollow and endless. At their center stood a man draped in black and crimson robes, his presence alone sending a chill down Shin's spine.
Tenka.
His lips curled into a slow, deliberate smile. "You came."
Shin stepped forward, his grip tightening on his blade. "And I'll end this."
Tenka chuckled. "Brave words. But the abyss is patient. It will claim you… in time."
With a wave of his hand, the cultists surged forward.
Shin reacted instantly, his blade cutting through the first wave of enemies. The clash of steel echoed through the valley, followed by bursts of chakra and the crackle of jutsu.
Kai weaved through the battlefield, his movements precise as he cut down the enemy. Aiko stood behind him, forming hand seals before releasing a barrage of kunai, each one infused with explosive tags.
Daichi roared, swinging his massive blade, cleaving through multiple cultists at once. Rei, ever the unpredictable fighter, danced through the chaos, his twin swords flashing like lightning.
But Tenka remained still, watching. Waiting.
Shin knew this wasn't the real battle.
The real fight… was with him.
Breaking through the battlefield, Shin charged at Tenka. The cult leader's eyes gleamed as he raised his hand, summoning a wave of darkness.
Shin countered, unleashing his own void energy. The two forces clashed, sending shockwaves through the valley.
"You resist," Tenka mused. "But you already belong to the abyss."
Shin gritted his teeth. "I don't belong to anyone."
With a burst of speed, he closed the distance, his blade slashing toward Tenka's throat.
But in the blink of an eye, Tenka vanished.
Shin's instincts flared. He spun, barely dodging a tendril of darkness that lashed out from behind.
Tenka reappeared, his fingers wreathed in abyssal fire. "The void does not take prisoners."
Shin didn't hesitate. He unleashed a surge of energy, forcing Tenka back. But the cult leader only smiled.
"You fight well," he admitted. "But the abyss is endless."
The shadows beneath Shin shifted.
And suddenly, he was falling.
Darkness swallowed him whole.
The world was silent.
Shin landed with a thud, his breath knocked from his lungs. He forced himself up, his heart pounding.
He wasn't in the valley anymore.
He was… somewhere else.
The sky was an endless void, a swirling mass of shadows and distant, whispering voices. The ground beneath him was smooth, reflective—like glass.
A figure stood ahead.
Not Tenka.
Something worse.
It was tall, featureless, its form shifting like liquid shadow. But its eyes… its eyes were ancient. Watching.
Shin clenched his fists. "What are you?"
The entity spoke, its voice a chorus of echoes.
"We are the beginning."
Shin took a step forward. "And I'll be your end."
The figure didn't move. "You cannot kill the void."
Shin raised his sword. "Then I'll carve my own path through it."
The entity remained still for a long moment. Then, it spoke again.
"We shall see."
The void trembled.
And the battle truly began.
