#3 CHAPTER 3: THE ANCIENT DRAGONS
The Ancient Dragons rules in the prehistoric era before the Erdtree. They held red lightning as a weapon, which mostly manifests in the form of spears and glaives, and had scales made of sharp, pointed gravel stones. (Which is a small clump of sharp, pointed stones) They were ruled over by Dragonlord Placidusax, said to have been Elden Lord in the time before the Erdtree, from the royal City of Farum Azula, and it is said that they would protect their lord as a wall of living rock.
Ancient Dragons have light grey bodies resembling stone. They possess four legs, as well as four wings fitted with gold, distinguishing them from their lesser descendants. They have short flat muzzles, orange yellow eyes, and thin grey hairs along their backs. They can breathe fire like many of their descendants.
Much later in the story, long after the reign of the Ancient Dragons, and Placidusax, during the reign of Queen Marika The Eternal, the Ancient Dragon Gransax brought havoc on Leyndell, Royal Capital, the only time in recorded history that Leyndell's walls have fallen. This marked the dawn of the war against the Dragons, during which the Tree Sentinels clothed themselves in armour resembling the bodies of the Dragons to protect the Erdtree.
Back to the earlier days, the Ancient Dragons are possibly among the first life forms that appeared in the Lands Between. Elden Ring's lore mentions an era of The Crucible when the Erdtree existed in it's primordial state, and many believe the ancient dragons have been around since then. Others believe the ancient dragons appeared after the Crucible era. It isn't certain which of the above (last paragraph) is true, but it is certain that the ancient dragons were once the rulers of the Lands Between.
