During the 30-day cooling-off period, I wasn't idle.
After we divided our assets, I realized I couldn't afford to buy another house in this expensive city.
After discussing it with Qin Zhi'an,
he decided to give me the house.
He and Gu Nian would go live with Qin Yue.
I didn't say anything,
but he insisted.
"Ah Wei, think carefully. If you've really made up your mind, this house is yours."
"I'm sorry for what I've done to you."
I didn't care to listen to his belated affection.
I planned to sell the house and move to a second or third-tier city, one with a more affordable cost of living.
With my pension, I would be able to live comfortably.
So, I contacted an agent.
When a strange call came in, I thought it was from the agent.
But when I picked up, it was Qin Yue.
He sounded somewhat frantic.
"Mom, why did you block me? I even got a new card just to reach you!"
I didn't answer, just put the phone aside,
continuing to browse real estate prices and reviews for different cities.
Qin Yue didn't seem to care whether I spoke or not.
Through the crackly phone line, I could hear him shouting.
"At your age, divorcing—aren't you ashamed? What about my face? Have you thought about me? You're both so old, why make things so difficult?"
I picked up the phone.
"Do you want Jingjing to live like this?"
There was a sudden silence on the other end.
I spoke calmly, feeling not much sadness.
I just wanted to teach him one last lesson.
"You've grown up and can't understand your mother. But what about Jingjing? Would you want her to get married and spend her life in the kitchen? Would you want her, at sixty-five, still taking care of everyone's meals and everything else?"
Qin Yue stayed silent, only his breathing came through.
I took a deep breath.
"Do you want Jingjing to hear you say these things and believe that a woman's life should be all about cooking and managing the household? Living to sixty-five, taking care of her elderly husband's first love?"
Memories of Qin Yue as a child flashed in my mind.
I remembered him holding an umbrella, running through the rain to pick me up from work.
I used to love this child, and he loved me too.
But time had changed a lot. I wiped my eyes.
"Qin Yue, your dad and mom care about you, and I had parents too, but they're gone, and no one cares about me anymore."
On the other end of the line, I heard a choked sob.
I put the phone down.
Before I hung up, I heard him call out.
"Mom!"
