Chapter 4
Mirabella
A month later.
News has spread around The Dynamic Nation about the upcoming engagement between Superior Alpha Jaxon and Amenadiel Oxford. It was taking place in Town 6, and fortunately, our family was on the guest list. We also got an amazing deal. Our family will be in charge of distributing drinks needed for the engagement ceremony. That would be enough to fill our coffers for the month and pay our workers.
We had received the invitation three days ago.
But the news took me by surprise because I didn't think it was possible. How Amenadiel's family was able to cohort with the Royal Family and pull that up, I don't know?
I have heard things about the Superior Alpha. How ruthless he was in battle and how he vanquished his enemies with no mercy.
"Who would be managing the store?" Gertrude asked, watching from the door while her daughter helped with styling my hair. I knew where she was going with this question.
"Certainly not, Cornelius. I have already appointed Finn." Finn was a very dedicated worker and soon, if he continues on this path, I will be promoting him to manager.
"Good. I was worried for a moment." I understood her concern.
After my father, Gandalf, had died, our finances were in disarray and Cornelius getting married to my mother only worsened our financial condition.
It was not till I was eighteen that I took over everything and revived the dead financial situation.
"Is the dress ready?" I nudged Stacy. I had to be there early as I was representing my family, The Weatherwoods. It was no secret that my mother wouldn't be able to attend the event as her sickness was old news.
"Yes, Miss Weatherwood." She nodded.
"And is it as I expected?" I will be wearing my house colours. Deep royal blue and cream.
"Yes, Miss. It looks elegant and would fit you perfectly well." I nodded absently. I didn't even give a damn about fashion. There was no time for that. I wore whatever I liked and worked mostly with my moods.
"All done, Miss. What do you think?" Stacy smiled at me in the mirror.
I looked at the reflection in the mirror, so different from my everyday look.
"Beautiful. This should do." I turned from side to side admiring the artistry of her work. The makeup was beautifully done and looked superb on me.
Stacy was interested in pursuing a career as a makeup artist, wanting to work with big names.
"Thank you, Miss."
"Get the dress. I would like to put it on." I told her.
She left the room, leaving me alone with her mother.
"Are you going to be okay?" She asked with a knowing glint in her eyes.
I hated crowds, especially the ones that would be attending this engagement ball. It was hard socializing with people who gossiped about you right in your very presence. Big bright fake smiles hiding the barbed tongue they kept hidden and struck when needed.
I busied myself with taking out the jewellery I would be using for the night. It was my family crest, a very beautiful but simple necklace that has been in my family for generations.
"I think so. I can manage." I admired the necklace. It complimented my slender neck which was one of my best features. According to my late father, I had inherited this lovely trait from his mother, my grandmother.
"You look beautiful." She had a proud smile on her face.
"Thank you. You should go check on mam." I whispered, blinking rapidly.
I wish someone else had been here to say this.
"Miss, we are here." I nodded at my driver through the visor, then exited the vehicle.
He was to park the car and join me inside but stay out of sight.
I made my way to the entrance, which was actually a staircase, and had to be assisted by a security guard with my hand clutching his arm for support.
I was wearing heels and my dress didn't actually permit much movement. My tailor had gone over the top with the dress she made for me since I asked her to do whatever she liked. That was obviously a mistake.
"Thank you." He acknowledged my appreciation with a nod and returned to his former position.
"Welcome, Miss Weatherwood. It's a pleasure meeting you. Can I see your invitation?" The attendant at the door greeted me. He looked quite dashing in his black tuxedo.
I smiled and took out the invitation, handing it to him.
He went over it to make sure that it was the original and then marked my name on the attendance list in his hands.
Most people would kill to get their hands on this card and be here since a lot of elites would be here from all over the Dynamic Nation.
"I hope you have a nice time, Miss Weatherwood." He tore the invitation card and threw the remnants into the trash bin close to his feet.
"You too." I sincerely hoped the higher forces were on my side tonight, as I didn't want to encounter any unpleasant person that would sour my mood.
The Oxford's residence was flooded with guests and was beautifully decorated with flowers and other decorating items.
I saw a platform which was strictly for couples and their families.
"The very best since the royal family are attending, right?" I recognized that snarky tone right away. I would recognize that voice anywhere.
"Lucia." I smiled. Just the person I wanted to see at the moment.
She emerged from my side wearing her usual smirk.
"And what a beautiful sight you make this evening. If I were a man, you would have taken my breath away, and I would have died because of suffocation." She joked, and I had to hold in my laughter. Her sense of humour had always been so dry and sarcastic that most people ended up misunderstanding her.
Lucia has been my best friend since childhood, and I am really happy to have her in my life. She made living bearable at least, the only person I trusted and could vent to.
"You look extraordinarily beautiful." Her deep forest green dress did wonders for her olive skin and curvaceous body.
"Says the seductress dressed in red. Do you have anyone in mind?" She took a flute of champagne from a passing waiter's tray.
I forgot to add that my tailor went crazy and chose red fabric, making me stand out when my plan was to blend in with the crowd.
My hair was styled to one side, revealing my slender neck, which also drew attention to the necklace that was lying on my cleavage.
I was draped in a red off-shoulder gown, which highlighted my curves.
"You know me well enough to know that I would never wear this if I was given a choice." I was tempted to take a flute of champagne, but I needed to leave this ball with a clear head.
"I see Brenda went overboard." We chuckled together.
"I wish we could just stay like this and not socialize with anyone else," I murmured.
"Spoken too soon," Lucia muttered under her breath.
I followed her gaze to see Hilda and her minions heading our way. And the look on their faces showed that they were up to no good.
"Dear goodness." Surely it wasn't too late to grab a flute of champagne?
