Tacky Elites

Chapter 5

Mirabella

"Is it too late to run?" I muttered, not moving my lips.

"The better question should be would we be thrown out if we decide to get physical?" Lucia chuckled but held her ground.

Hilda and her minions were taking their time in getting to us and I watched with indifference.

I had known Hilda since we were kids, and the shocking thing was that we started as friends, but before the end of grade three, we turned enemies.

This was set off by the fact that a boy she had a crush on didn't like her back but me because, according to him, I was prettier and nicer. So from that day on, Hilda swore to make my life hell even though it happened a long while ago.

"If it isn't the nameless dynamic trash and her Beta ugly friend." She sneered, standing in front of us with her two minions.

Dora and Griselda had matching smirks on their faces.

"Oh. Is she talking to us?" Lucia looked at me intentionally ignoring Hilda.

I bit my lip to hide my smile. I had learned to stop reacting to Hilda's jeers and just let her rant till she was tired and left on her own will.

But Lucia was ready to retaliate and give her tit-for-tat.

"You know I am. But it's quite a surprise to see both of you here. It's really disappointing that the Oxfords decided to risk their reputation by allowing both of you into their residence." Her minions snickered, sipping their champagne.

"And I know who pained you are you were not the one chosen to be the Superior Alpha's consort. So I understand your bitterness. I wonder why the Oxfords welcomed a viper into their home." Lucia goaded her.

"How dare you?" Hilda gasped in outrage, drawing the interest of the other elites socializing around us.

And this was what I had wanted to avoid. I wanted to blend in with the crowd not stand out.

"You filthy Beta. You think you are better than me. You and this nameless dynamic deserve each other. I hope you both die, mate, less." Sniffing with anger, she turned, flipping her hair with attitude narrowly missing my face as I stepped aside on time.

"Be gone, Omega witch." Lucia snorted, watching Hilda and her cronies leave.

"I shouldn't be encouraging you, but good job."

"As you should." She winked, and this time, I laughed unrestrained.

Jaxon

My ears perked up as I heard a soft tinkling female laugh, prompting me to snap my head up.

"Your Majesty? Is everything alright?" The couple that I was discussing with asked. They had nervous looks on their faces, and I totally ignored them.

I scanned the crowd trying to pinpoint where that laugh had come from.

As an Alpha, my senses were more advanced than the other dynamics. So I tried to search for the woman. Hopefully, I find her, and what?

"Your Majesty?" I glowered, irritated that they were distracting me. They flinched from seeing the hard look on my face.

"Leave me be," I grunted, finally turning away from them.

I heard their hurried footsteps as they moved away quickly.

The laugh came again, and I closed my eyes as it vibrated through my body. The feelings the sound elicited from my body confused me.

"Jax, nice work driving away the only people who were bold enough to have a conversation with you. What's wrong?" Aelarion asked me stepping to my side when he noticed my stiffness.

"A laugh." My jaw clenched tight in annoyance. I felt like I wasn't supposed to share this with anyone. Like the laugh was supposed to be just for me and no one else.

"A laugh? You have lost me at this point." He replied, confused.

"I heard a woman laugh."

"Yeah, it's normal since we are surrounded by people, especially women who are looking for mates." He reasoned.

"No, this is different. You don't understand." I listened intently to see if I would hear her again.

But the voice was silent, it was gone.

"Besides, you can't actually be yearning for a strange woman's voice. You are soon to be engaged to Amenadiel Oxford. This is your engagement party in case you have forgotten." He admonished.

One that I was forced to attend. It wasn't like I had anything against getting married, but I would definitely want to get married on my own terms.

"I didn't forget," I said through gritted teeth.

"Good. Let's go. Jax?"

I froze standing stock still as I heard the strange female speak again. What manner of magic was this? Why was I craving to listen more to this voice?

"The voice again?"

"Yes." I nodded. Desperation tore at me to search for her. But why?

"This is getting serious. This is not the time for you to have an interest in another woman." Aelarion muttered under his breath.

The crowd cleared for a moment and I saw a lady dressed in a red dress. I was sure it was her. Because she was talking, and the voice matched with what I heard.

I couldn't see her face, but I was able to see that she had honey-brown hair, which was swept to one side and falling over one pert shoulder.

Her neck was slender and beautifully arched. I had no doubt that her facial features would be no exception and beautiful from the few features that I had glimpsed.

But all too soon she was gone. I frowned as displeasure moved through me as I lost sight of her.

"Now you are making me worried."

"Honey brown hair swept to one side, slender neck and red gown. Find her for me." I snarled low in my throat.

"Now you are scaring me." He looked at me with questioning eyes.

"Tell the guards to search for her discreetly." I walked off.

Who was this woman, and why did she invade my thoughts? Why did I react so strongly to her?
