They returned to the settlement only to see the gates open. Valentius noted the fresh head on the spikes.
He nodded to himself. Wrath's servants would get what was coming to them one by one!
Valentius stepped through the gates first. The crowds were looking at him with wide eyes. There was even a woman with a platter at the front.
Bread and salt.
No Nightshade had ever been greeted with bread and salt. That wasn't the nightshade way.
Valentius made a slight bow with his head. He stepped to the woman, took some of the bread, and dipped it in the salt, promising his protection and doing no harm.
Albert and Marek mirrored him.
"Welcome, Caesar!" The lady told him.
"The ogres are gone," Valentius said. The crowd shifted in their places, but Valentius was not done. "And nothing will bother you anymore."
"Oh, but it will," a man said from the crowd. "Even if the ogres are gone, there is still the dragon to think about!"
