Into the Fire

The calm of the extraction faded quickly as the vehicle raced through the air, cutting through the turbulent winds. Vale's team was now in the clear, but that didn't mean they were out of danger. The Hidden Hand's forces were relentless, and Vale could feel their pursuit closing in. He turned to Zero, his eyes hard.

"Any sign of pursuit?"

Zero's hands danced over his console, his face illuminated by the soft blue glow of the screen. "They're on our tail. I'm tracking several enemy ships—stealth mode, but I can see their heat signatures. They'll be on us in less than ten minutes."

Vale's jaw tightened. "Can we outrun them?"

Zero's eyes narrowed as he studied the data. "Not if they're using faster interceptors. We need to shake them."

"We're not making it to the rendezvous point if we don't do something now," Vale muttered, looking out the viewport at the dark expanse of the sky ahead. "We'll need to fight."

Kiera's voice cut in, her tone sharp. "You think we'll have enough time to get to safety if we stop to fight?"

"We don't have a choice," Vale replied, his voice low. "We have to hold them off. If they get close enough, they'll disable our transport before we even get near the extraction zone."

Doc spoke up, checking his weapons with the cold precision of a soldier who had faced death too many times. "We'll need to make this quick. We can't afford to waste energy on a drawn-out fight."

"Agreed," Vale said, his gaze now focused. "Zero, plot a course. Get us in position. We'll intercept them."

Zero tapped a few buttons on his console, and the vehicle's controls hummed as the ship changed course, angling toward a nearby mountain range. "I've got a spot where we can make a stand. Should give us some cover from the air."

Vale gave him a quick nod. "Good. Get us there now."

Minutes passed in tense silence as the vehicle raced toward the designated location. Kiera, Doc, and Vale readied their gear, preparing for the coming battle. They couldn't afford to make mistakes, not now, not when they were so close to securing their survival.

The ship dropped altitude, gliding just above the jagged peaks of the mountain range. The wind howled as the terrain below rushed past in a blur of gray and white. Vale's eyes stayed locked on the horizon, watching for any sign of movement.

And then he saw it—a glint of metal cutting through the sky.

"They're here," he said, his voice steady.

Zero's fingers moved swiftly across the console. "I'm taking control of the ship's weapons systems. You'll have to handle the rest."

"Got it," Vale replied, his pulse quickening. He turned to Kiera and Doc. "Stay sharp. When I give the signal, we hit hard. We make them pay for this."

The enemy ships appeared from the cloud cover, sleek and deadly. There were three of them—high-tech interceptors, designed for fast, precise strikes. They closed in fast, and the lead ship opened fire, sending a barrage of plasma rounds toward Vale's transport.

The air crackled with energy as Vale's ship banked hard, narrowly avoiding the attack. "Zero, return fire!" Vale ordered.

Zero's voice was calm, even as the ship shook from the impact. "Already on it."

A series of laser bolts streaked from the transport's underside, striking the lead interceptor. It exploded in a fireball, debris scattering into the sky. But the other two ships were already closing in, not giving them a moment's respite.

"Keep moving!" Vale shouted, grabbing onto the ship's harness as the vehicle dipped and swerved to dodge more fire.

Kiera was already on her feet, her rifle raised. She took a few quick shots, her aim true. A second interceptor took a hit to its thrusters and began spiraling out of control. But the third was still coming.

"Doc, get to the gunner's seat!" Vale shouted. "We need more firepower."

Doc sprinted forward, quickly strapping himself into the seat. The heavy machine guns mounted on the vehicle fired in rapid succession, blasting chunks of armor from the remaining interceptor's hull.

But the enemy pilot wasn't backing down. The final interceptor juked to the side, evading their shots, and returned fire with plasma blasts. One of the rounds hit the rear stabilizer, causing the transport to tilt dangerously.

"Hold on!" Vale growled, fighting to maintain control. "We're not done yet!"

Kiera, ever calm under pressure, took aim at the interceptor's exposed engine. A single, well-placed shot. The ship exploded in a brilliant flash, its pieces scattering across the sky.

The fight was over.

Vale exhaled sharply, his heart racing. "Is everyone okay?"

Zero checked his console. "We're good. The damage is minimal, but we're still a bit off course."

Vale gave a nod. "We'll survive. That's all that matters right now. Let's get back on track."

As the team settled back into their seats, Vale couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't over. The Hidden Hand would be back. And the war was far from finished.
