The hum of the ship's engines was a constant, comforting sound as Vale and his team recovered from their narrow escape. The landscape outside had shifted; the jagged mountains had given way to the dark void of the night sky, and the dim glow of distant stars now filled their view. Yet, despite the calm, the air inside the transport was thick with tension.
The mission wasn't over. In fact, the hardest part was yet to come.
Vale sat in the cockpit, staring out at the swirling darkness of space. His mind was on the extraction point, still far away. Even with the fight behind them, the Hidden Hand was relentless, and they would not rest until they had reclaimed what was theirs. Vale had seen it before—an enemy that refused to acknowledge defeat until every last target was wiped out.
Zero's voice cut through the silence. "We've lost the lead, but they're still out there. I'm not taking any chances. I'm putting us on an evasive flight path."
Vale turned, meeting Zero's gaze. "Good. We're not taking chances, period."
Kiera stood from her seat and made her way to the back of the cockpit, her boots making soft thuds on the metal floor. She leaned against the bulkhead, arms crossed. "What's the plan once we hit the rendezvous point?"
Vale didn't immediately answer. He had been weighing his options, his mind working through every possible scenario. The truth was, the Hidden Hand's forces weren't the only threat they had to worry about. The intel they had acquired was too valuable, and the team had already paid a heavy price to get it.
"We'll move fast," Vale said finally. "Once we reach the extraction point, we'll be on the ground for the shortest time possible. If we run into another problem, we fight our way through."
Doc, who had been quietly inspecting his weapons, spoke up. "Not sure how much more fighting we can handle. If we run into trouble, we might not make it out in one piece."
Vale locked eyes with him. "We will make it out. We always do."
Doc didn't argue, but the unease in his eyes said it all. There was something more pressing about this mission. The deeper they went, the more the team had to rely on their instincts, their training, and each other.
Suddenly, a warning light flashed across Zero's console. His fingers flew over the controls as a series of incoming data streams appeared on the screen.
"Not again," Zero muttered, but his voice was laced with determination.
"What's going on?" Vale asked, standing up.
"I've got multiple unidentified ships on my radar," Zero replied, his eyes scanning the readouts. "Too many to be a coincidence. And they're getting closer. They're definitely coming for us."
Kiera moved toward the rear of the ship, checking her weapon. "How close?"
"Five minutes out," Zero answered, working quickly. "And they've jammed our long-range sensors. We won't be able to track them until they're right on top of us."
Vale's eyes narrowed. "We're not sticking around to find out."
He turned to Kiera. "Prepare for another fight. Doc, get ready. Zero, get us in the best position you can. If we have to fight, I want the advantage."
Zero nodded, his fingers flying over the console as the ship's systems hummed with life. He reconfigured their flight path, diverting power to the shields and weapons systems. It wasn't the best position, but it was the best they were going to get.
"Engines are primed," Zero said, his voice tense. "We'll have to make a run for it. We can't stay in the open or they'll pick us off."
The ship accelerated, pulling hard against the gravity of the planet. The stars blurred as the vessel sped toward their extraction zone, but the enemy was closing in, and there was no way to avoid a direct confrontation now.
"Here they come," Zero said, watching as the incoming ships appeared on his radar. "Looks like we're dealing with elite hunters. They're fast, and they're armed to the teeth."
Kiera smiled grimly as she checked her rifle one more time. "Let's make sure they regret chasing us."
Vale's pulse quickened. The time for talking was over. The mission had shifted, and now they were fighting for survival.
"Take them out fast," Vale ordered. "No hesitation."
The first enemy ship broke the atmosphere and appeared on the radar. A sleek, black silhouette darted toward them at an incredible speed. Vale's heart pounded as the ship closed in. They wouldn't have long before they were in firing range.
"Zero, deploy countermeasures!" Vale barked.
Zero's fingers slammed against the controls, releasing a swarm of electromagnetic pulses. A moment later, a barrage of missiles shot toward the incoming ship. They hit with a deafening explosion, but the enemy ship evaded, skimming the blast radius.
"Damn, they're good," Kiera muttered, her eyes locked on the enemy craft. "But not good enough."
She raised her rifle and took a clean shot. The round hit the ship's engine, and the vessel lurched. Another hit. The ship spiraled out of control before exploding in a violent flash.
"Got one," Kiera said, lowering her weapon.
But the danger wasn't over. The remaining ships closed in fast, their weapons charging.
"Doc, prepare the gunner's station!" Vale shouted. "This is going to get ugly."
Doc bolted to the rear of the ship, manning the mounted turrets. Zero's voice cut through the tension. "We've got two more on our six. They're coming in hot."
Vale's grip tightened around the handle as he prepared for the onslaught. "Brace yourselves. They won't give up without a fight."
The battle was on.
