chapter 42

The very evening that Iris mentioned the word rune, we rode horses and headed toward the ridge where the newly discovered dungeon was. There were four of us: Iris, me, Lize, and Erica.

Claudia remained in the castle, saying that there must be at least one person to guard the city.

After riding for about an hour, we arrived at the entrance to a cave that had been revealed between the collapsed mountain slopes.

Iris approached the cave entrance, pulling out her sword after tying her horse to a nearby tree and using a scroll to create a barrier to prevent the monsters from perceiving what was inside.

"The Rune's wavelength has been discovered, but no internal exploration has been done. That's what we need to do. Don't let your guard down, because you never know what might be inside."

Lize and Erika also took out their respective weapons. Lize had a pair of daggers with blue gems set into them, the same color as her eyes, while Erika had a Japanese sword with intricate patterns carved into the blade.

It's not because of the mod, that's the original NPC's weapon.

'Because it's a Japanese company.'

Although the actual setting of Blizzard 4 was Western, there were no users who would find fault with the fact that a Japanese sword appeared in a game made in Japan by a Japanese company.

To begin with, the 'Do' series weapons from the first to the fourth installment of the Blunder series were not very good in performance, so they were not even a subject of controversy.

In the user-created tier list, there were always one or two that were in the mid-3rd tier at best, and most of them were stuck in tier 5, which was practically trash.

"I will go in first."

Iris, who held the longsword tightly in one hand, took a brisk step forward, pushing the torch in her other hand forward first. Lize followed her. I was the third, and Erica was the last.

As if the distinction between public and private was clear, Lize shut her mouth as soon as she entered, as if it was a lie. It felt like she was a completely different person than before.

The overall size of the cave seemed larger than what I had seen in the game. Of course, considering how large the boss here was supposed to be, the size of the boss room should be huge as well.

'My back already hurts.'

The thought of having to wrestle with that guy for a while already made the back of my neck hurt. I sighed deeply and followed behind Lize.

"...."

The only sound that could be heard in the cave was the clanking of armor. This was because Iris, Lize, and Erica were all thoroughly armed with silver full plate armor.

Now he was starting to feel a bit more knightly. Underneath his armor, he was still wearing nothing but a white sleeveless top and dolphin pants, but he decided not to care.

Of course, I was dressed in my usual clothes and leather pants. I tried on my armor just in case, but it was too late because I couldn't roll.

This doesn't mean you have to roll much more uncomfortably, but it does mean you can't roll without tilting your head forward like when the weight of your armor exceeds your character's available weight.

I tried it a few times to see if it made sense, but my body didn't really fall to the ground, it just swayed for a moment.

Even running was out of the question. Claudia laughed at my squirming behavior and said I needed to build up my stamina, but I couldn't laugh because I knew why I was doing it.

So I just took it off.

'I'd rather go bare-handed than give up on rolling.'

It was clear which of the two would take priority.

"Stop for a moment."

Iris stopped walking. A wide pupil was spread out in front of her. I knew at a glance where I was. This was the passage leading to the boss of this dungeon.

"There's too much space. Rize, stay next to me. The newbie, stand next to Erica. We'll move in pairs."

Lize took a step forward and stood next to Iris, and Erica took her place next to me. They were really sharp, and elements were slowly leaking out from the weapons in their hands.

Compared to the three of them who walked cautiously without letting their guard down because they didn't know what would come out, I walked while pretending to be somewhat wary of my surroundings.

The mobs that appear here are nothing special. Besides, even if I don't step forward, the knight commanders will beat them all up.

One boss here is enough to drain my mental power.

"Erika, where is the rune reaction detected?"

After hearing Iris' question, Erica looked down at the necklace she was wearing around her neck. It was a necklace that was emitting a green light.

"It's quite a distance underground from our location. Assuming the road is straight and not twisted, it should take a little over an hour to get there at this speed."

"One hour in a straight line? Then it would take at least two hours to get there. If you go back and forth, five hours would just fly by."

"And if a monster appears in the middle, the time will increase even more."

Those words came out, Iris wrapped wind around her sword, Lize created ice flowers on her twin daggers, and Erica covered her weapon in flames, all at almost the same time.

Something with rough black and gray scales was approaching from the passage in the distance. Lize and Erica gasped at the sight of it.

It was a civet almost the size of a human.

Dozens of pairs of legs squirmed around in a disgusting manner, all covered in scales. The tentacles on its face quivered incessantly. The hard carapace on its back was also covered in scales.

It wasn't even just one. There were five more of the same type approaching from behind.

"Ugh, I never imagined that such a monster would appear. What the heck is this place?"

"… … It's a little bit gross. No, not a little, but a lot."

Lize and Erica trembled and summoned elements into their swords. Ice covered Lize's body, and flames rose from Erika's sword, illuminating the surroundings.

'I shouldn't take them with me when I get the magic book later.'

Later on, you will discover a dungeon filled with not just those squishy monsters, but insects the size of humans.

It was famous for shocking players directly, not the characters. It was so bad that the production company even placed an NPC in front to warn players to back away because there were bugs swarming around there.

But, sadly enough, there was a magic book there that I needed to get. If it weren't for that magic book, it would have been a place I wouldn't even bother looking at.

"I'll handle it quickly. Rookie, you stay quietly in the back."

As Iris said that, she wrapped her sword in a whirlwind and rushed at the raccoon. Lize and Erica also let out a groan and rushed at it, each wrapped in ice and fire.

-Pfft!

And in one shot he blew the fox's head off.

The fox, whose head had burst open, twisted its body here and there, wiggling its joints, then soon curled its legs and died. The others were the same. Their bodies would burst and be torn to pieces if they were even touched by a weapon.

"Huh?"

A bewildered sound escaped Lize's mouth as she was so easily dealt with compared to her hideous visuals. It seemed as if she had never thought she would die in one blow.

The reason was the fundamental difference in specs. This dungeon opens in the level 20 range, while the Silver Dawn Knight Commanders are bosses in the mid-to-late game.

Of course, it is possible to crush the mobs here with your specs.

"You're not surprised this time either, rookie."

Iris, who had neatly chopped the raccoons into pieces with a few slashes of her sword, turned her head towards me. I couldn't see her expression because of her helmet, but I could guess what kind of face she had.

"Do you have any idea what this dungeon is about?"

It was a voice filled with subtle anticipation. I answered without changing my expression.

"I do know something."

"Really?! No, wait. But why didn't you tell me until now?!"

"I'll need your help later. Right now, I'm fine with just being myself."

I looked around and found a large crack in the wall. I walked towards it and walked towards the center of the cavity until the stalactite was right next to me. From there, I took three steps to the right.

The three of them looked like they had no idea what I was doing.

"Oh, you guys shouldn't be there either. You should go stand over there."

"...?"

Although they looked extremely confused, the three of them retreated back to the passageway where the raccoon had just emerged, as I had told them. They seemed to think that they had nothing to lose by listening to me.

After confirming that the Knight Commanders had retreated to a safe area, I stabbed the bloody sword into his stomach. No one was surprised since Lize had already boasted about the bloody sword's special abilities.

In that state, he sucked in blood to the limit and then pulled out the sword. A sinister blood color covered the sword's body.

"Newbie, why are you suddenly using that? And why did you tell us to stand here?"

"You guys shouldn't get swept up in it too, right?"

"We shouldn't be swept away together. What the hell is that, a newbie?"

-Kuguguguguguung!

Before Iris could even finish her words, the floor of the crater began to collapse with a loud noise. The floor on the side of the passage where Iris, Erica, and Rize were was the first to rip left and right and sink.

The three of them were startled and tried to save me, but a gap that seemed several times the height of a person had already opened between us. Even the commander of the knights could not jump over that width without running.

Moreover, even at this very moment, the crack between us was growing wider and wider. The speed at which the floor was collapsing was getting faster and faster. The crack was gradually coming closer to me.

Iris shouted urgently.

"Newbie! Again… …!"

"It's okay, it's okay. I won't die. Do you trust me?"

"It's not a matter of trusting or believing! If there was something like this, I'd tell you in advance."

Before I could finish my sentence, the rest of my body, which was barely holding on, collapsed and I began to fall down. The silver armor of Lize, Iris, and Erica moved away in an instant.

"Just follow the road and come down! I'll be waiting for you downstairs!"

I screamed as loud as I could as I fell down. I'm not sure if you could hear me because the floor was so loud.

'When I go back, I'll be asked again why I didn't tell you in advance.'

It was inevitable.

This boss is one that you have to defeat by thoroughly performing gimmicks, so if there are multiple people, the aggro will bounce around and you will likely waste more time. If you are unlucky, an accident can happen in the middle.

It was an envoy to take such a risk. It was sufficient to limit the help of the Knight Commanders to Phase 4 after clearing all the gimmicks.

'It's time to start getting ready now.'

It felt like I had been falling for almost 10 seconds, but I finally saw a puddle of water under my feet and calmly prepared to attack with a fall.
