Seeing the situation, Lucas focused even more, his gaze slowly moving up from Aunt Miriam's abdomen. But then... his expression turned a bit odd. It turned out that he could see right through Aunt Miriam's clothes...
Being young and full of energy, Lucas felt a surge of heat rise within him.
But Of course, Miriam had no idea that Lucas's eyes had such mystical abilities. She continued speaking.
"Anna has been so worried about me. I heard she invited Dr Christopher Jackson to check on me."
"Christopher?" Lucas cut off his special vision and asked instinctively.
"Yes, he's quite a gentle young man, and I've heard he's a good doctor" Miriam praised, clearly having a good impression of Dr Christopher.
"I hope Dr Christopher can cure Aunt Miriam's illness" Lucas said with a smile.
Christopher Jackson had recently been assigned to Greenfield town as part of a targeted support initiative for impoverished areas. Lucas had seen him a couple of times; he was indeed quite refined, though he seemed a bit aloof toward people like them.
Since Christopher was coming to see Miriam soon, Lucas decided not to rush into treating her himself and to wait and see how things went.
"Lucas, it's time to eat. Mom, let me help you up" Anna said as she entered the room, wearing a floral apron.
Dinner was quite a feast, with Anna preparing four dishes and a soup. Growing up in a rural town like Greenfield, cooking was something everyone could handle easily. Being from a single-parent family, Anna was even more responsible and independent than most kids.
"Anna, your cooking is amazing" Lucas said, giving her a thumbs up in admiration. Eating with Anna and her mom made him feel a sense of home.
"Eat as much as you like" Anna said, her face full of smiles as she watched Lucas enjoy the meal, feeling very satisfied.
Miriam felt a headache coming on, so she put down her cutlery after just a few bites. Watching Lucas eat ravenously, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy.
"Lucas has had it rough, stuck with that shrew Tasha. He can't even get a decent meal."
"Yeah, Lucas. If she bullies you again, come eat at our place. You can also keep an eye on my mom when I'm not around" Anna said, her heart aching for him.
"From now on, I'll take care of you both" Lucas promised, patting his chest with determination. His eyes were clear and resolute, knowing these two genuinely cared for him. A warm feeling surged through him. Now that he had the ability, he was determined to earn enough to give them a good life.
"Haha..." Hearing Lucas promise to look after them, both women felt a strange warmth in their hearts.
"You're still young, focus on your studies," Miriam said, looking at the sensible Lucas with great comfort.
"I'm not that young. There's plenty I can do," Lucas replied, and just as he was about to mention helping Aunt Miriam with her illness, there was a knock at the door.
"Is Mrs Miriam home?" Dr Christopher's voice came from outside.
"Dr. Christopher, please come in" Anna said, putting down her cutlery and going to greet him.
Christopher, wearing his white coat and with a medical bag slung over his shoulder, walked in slowly, chatting casually.
"Anna, have you eaten?"
"We're eating now" Anna replied, leading Christopher inside.
Christopher nodded, and when he saw Lucas inside, he was slightly surprised, wondering why he was there.
"Dr. Chris, have you eaten? Pls join us" Mrs Miriam said, standing to greet him.
"No need to get up, Mrs Miriam. I've already eaten," Dr Christopher quickly said, helping her sit back down.
"Have a seat, Dr. Chris" Lucas offered, helping to pull up a chair for him.
Dr Christopher ignored Lucas and sat down right next to Mrs Miriam. Lucas, though a bit annoyed, didn't show it and helped Anna clear the table.
Once the table was clean, Anna made Dr Christopher a cup of tea and placed a plate of biscuits on the table.
"No need for formalities between us" Dr Christopher said warmly, casually glancing at Anna. She was much prettier than his wife back in the city. If he could get her into his bed, it might make up for the trouble of coming to this remote town.
Though Dr Chris tried to hide his intentions, Lucas still noticed it. He had wondered why Christopher came so late for a house call, and now he knew.
"It's only right" Anna replied with a smile. She respected Dr Chris for his polite and refined demeanor.
"Dr. Christopher, it's getting late. Let's get on with the treatment" Miriam suggested, not wanting to delay Dr Chris's rest.
"Alright, Mrs Miriam, please sit on the bed, and I'll check what's wrong" Dr Chris said, eagerly helping Mrs Miriam into the room. He couldn't help but admire her skin, which was as smooth as a baby's. The rumors were true; even though Mrs Miriam was nearly forty, her skin and face looked like a twenty-year-old's.
Miriam felt Dr Chris's hand on her waist and wanted to move it away, but seeing his gentlemanly demeanor, she thought she was overthinking it and let him guide her inside.
Lucas noticed Christopher's subtle actions and frowned, thinking,
"What a wolf in sheep's clothing. If he's this bold in the open, who knows what he'll do inside." He followed them into the room.
"Mrs Miriam, Anna, don't worry. I graduated from a top medical school in the country, and I can handle this minor illness" Dr Christopher assured them as he helped Miriam onto the bed.
Hearing Dr Christopher call her "Anna" in a kind of romantic way made Anna feel a bit uncomfortable, but she didn't say anything. She felt maybe she misheard or something and so didn't push it.
"Yes, I trust you" Miriam nodded, feeling quite favorable toward Dr Christopher for his attentiveness.
"Heh, trust me, you're in good hands" Dr Christopher said as he calmly examined Mrs Miriam after she settled down.
"Can you hurry up? Aunt Miriam is not feeling too well" Lucas urged impatiently, annoyed by Charles's endless boasting.
"What's the rush? Healing isn't something you can hurry. Show some manners" Dr Chris shot Lucas a glare before turning to Anna.
"Anna, this outsider is disrupting my work. I suggest we ask him to leave."
Annie was also tired of Dr Christopher's bragging, but since he was treating her mother, she had to endure it. She whispered to Lucas.
"Lucas, maybe you should head back."
"I'm not leaving. I'll keep quiet" Lucas insisted.
He didn't trust Chris around Anna and her mother, fearing he might try something inappropriate if he left.
Anna didn't want to force Lucas out, so she nodded and said to Christopher.
"Dr. Chris, don't mind him. Lucas will stay quiet."
Christopher wanted to kick out the guy who was ruining his chances with Anna, but he couldn't appear petty after her reassurance.
"Fine, he can stay. Just keep it down and don't cause any more disruptions."
