Chapter 10: The Data Drive of Doom (Probably)

Finally, A Moment to Breathe (Sort Of)

Max slumped in the pilot's chair, still glistening with unnatural slipperiness from his accidental frictionless escape.

He groaned. "Bob, how long until I'm not slippery anymore?"

B.O.B. beeped. "Unknown. The System did not include a duration. You may remain frictionless indefinitely."

Max's eye twitched. "If I slip out of my own bed tonight, I'm suing reality."

B.O.B. ignored him. "On a more relevant note: You have successfully stolen the data drive. Mission complete."

Max sighed. "Right. That. I should be happy about that."

He wasn't.

Because now that he had the data drive, he had to figure out what the hell was actually inside it.

And if Baylor wanted it this badly, that meant one of two things:

1. It was worth a fortune.

2. It was incredibly dangerous.

Max had a terrible feeling it was the second one.

"Alright," he muttered. "Let's get back to Velbraxis-9 before more pirates start chasing me."

B.O.B. beeped. "Plotting course back to the questionable trading hub."

Max sighed. "Yeah, that's a perfect name for it."

The ship jumped to hyper-speed, and Max finally let himself relax.

For three minutes.

Then the System beeped.

[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.]

Max sat up straight. "Uh. Bob?"

B.O.B. hesitated. "Captain… someone is hacking the ship's systems."

Max's stomach dropped. "WHAT?!"

The holographic screens flickered, and a deep, robotic voice crackled over the speakers:

"WHOEVER STOLE THIS DATA DRIVE… YOU HAVE MADE A VERY BIG MISTAKE."

Max swallowed.

"Oh. That's not good."

---

Emergency Landing (Because Of Course Something Goes Wrong)

The ship's controls glitched violently.

Max yanked the controls, but the ship was being forced out of hyper-speed.

B.O.B. beeped. "Warning: We are being remotely pulled out of warp."

Max panicked. "WHO CAN EVEN DO THAT?!"

The robotic voice boomed through the speakers.

"YOU HAVE TWO CHOICES: RETURN THE DATA DRIVE… OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES."

Max gritted his teeth.

"Bob, where the hell are we dropping out of warp?"

B.O.B. beeped. "Scanning… We are being forced toward an uncharted moon."

Max groaned. "Let me guess. It's a creepy abandoned place where bad things happen?"

B.O.B. paused. "Correct."

"Of course it is!"

The ship plunged out of hyper-speed, and the moon rushed up toward them at terrifying speed.

Alarms blared.

"WARNING: BRACE FOR CRASH LANDING."

Max screamed.

The ship slammed into the moon's surface, skidding across rocky terrain before crashing into a dense alien forest.

Metal groaned. Sparks flew.

Then—silence.

Max groaned. "Ow."

B.O.B. beeped. "Crash landing successful."

Max scowled. "That is NOT what 'successful' means!"

---

Lost on a Creepy Moon

Max staggered out of the ship, rubbing his aching ribs.

The moon was dark, covered in twisted alien trees that looked like they wanted to eat him. A thick mist swirled around his feet.

The air smelled like burnt metal, damp moss, and bad decisions.

Max sighed. "Yep. This place is definitely haunted."

B.O.B. beeped. "Captain, I detect anomalous energy signatures nearby."

Max froze. "Define anomalous."

"Unknown. But statistically, it will try to kill you."

Max groaned. "Why is that always the answer?"

Before B.O.B. could respond, the System beeped.

[NEW QUEST: SURVIVE WHATEVER THE HELL THIS PLACE IS]

Figure out why you were forced to land here.

Avoid getting eaten by something.

Don't die.

Max sighed. "Well, at least the objectives are clear."

Then the robotic voice returned—this time not through the ship's speakers.

"YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE COME HERE."

Max turned slowly.

A tall, cloaked figure stood at the edge of the forest.

Its face was hidden beneath a metallic mask, and its eyes glowed with eerie red light.

Max froze.

"…Oh crap."
