chapter 89: trap

Elias forced himself to move through the room, cataloging every detail. The wardrobe against the far wall, the writing desk positioned under the window, the faint scent of polished wood and something darker—something that lingered from the Alpha's presence.

He pulled open one of the drawers, scanning the contents. Empty. Of course. They hadn't even bothered to give him the illusion of settling in. He was here to be observed, not to belong.

His fingers curled against the wood before he let the drawer slide shut. His gaze flicked to the door. Locked, most likely. Not that it mattered. Escaping wouldn't do him any good. Not yet.

Instead, he moved to the bed, pressing a hand against the mattress, testing its softness. Another unnecessary luxury. Another way to remind him that this was different.

He wasn't like the others.

The realization sent a cold weight through his chest.

They had singled him out.

The Alpha had singled him out.

And Elias didn't know whether that was an advantage—or a death sentence.

A quiet knock at the door snapped him from his thoughts. He straightened immediately, his mask slipping back into place.

The door opened, and a soldier stepped inside. Not one of the lower-ranked guards. This one carried himself differently—shoulders squared, gaze sharp. He wasn't here just to deliver a message.

"Elias." The soldier's voice was firm, neutral. "The Alpha has given orders. You'll take your meals in the main hall from now on."

Elias held back his reaction, keeping his expression carefully blank. The main hall.

With the Alpha.

With the soldiers.

With everyone.

A public display.

Another move in the game.

He lowered his head slightly, acknowledging the order. "Understood."

The soldier studied him for a moment before nodding and stepping back. The door shut behind him with a heavy finality.

Elias remained standing, his thoughts moving too fast.

The Alpha wasn't just watching him.

He was pulling him into his world.

Forcing him into the light.

Elias exhaled slowly, steadying himself. If the Alpha wanted to test him, fine. Let him.

But Elias wasn't just going to survive this.

He was going to win.
