chapter 90: a command

The next morning came too quickly.

Elias barely slept—not that he expected to. The weight of the previous night pressed against him, every muscle coiled with the awareness that his world had shifted.

He dressed carefully, choosing plain, unremarkable clothing. Nothing that would stand out. Nothing that would invite further attention. He needed to control what they saw, even if the Alpha had already caught a glimpse of what lay beneath.

A knock at the door broke the silence. It wasn't hesitant. It wasn't a request.

Time to move.

Elias exhaled slowly before stepping forward and opening the door.

Two guards stood outside, their expressions impassive. Neither spoke as they fell into step beside him, flanking him as they walked through the corridors.

It wasn't just an escort.

It was a statement.

A few soldiers turned their heads as he passed, their eyes flickering with curiosity. Some whispered. Others simply watched.

Elias kept his gaze ahead, his face carefully neutral. This wasn't new. He had spent years being observed, being measured, being underestimated.

Let them look.

Let them think what they wanted.

He would give them nothing.

The doors to the main hall loomed ahead, tall and imposing. As they swung open, the low hum of conversation filled the air—soldiers eating, talking, the sharp clatter of metal against plates.

And at the center of it all, the Alpha.

He sat at the head of the long table, his posture relaxed, but his presence undeniable. He wasn't speaking. He didn't need to. The room moved around him, every person subtly attuned to his presence.

And then his gaze lifted.

Elias didn't freeze. He refused to. He simply continued forward, keeping his steps measured, his expression blank.

The Alpha's lips curled slightly. Not quite a smirk, but something close.

A flick of his fingers, and one of the guards pulled out a chair.

Not just any chair.

The one beside him.

Elias hesitated for only a fraction of a second before lowering himself into the seat. His body was tense with the weight of every eye in the room on him, but he didn't let it show.

The Alpha poured himself a drink, swirling the liquid before taking a slow sip. He didn't speak right away. He let the silence stretch, thick with meaning.

And then, finally—

"Sleep well?"

Elias met his gaze, forcing his voice to stay even. "Yes."

A quiet chuckle. "Liar."

The word was soft, almost amused. Elias didn't react.

The Alpha tilted his head, watching him as if waiting for something. When Elias remained silent, the smirk deepened.

"Eat," he said simply.

It wasn't a suggestion.

Elias picked up his utensils, forcing himself to move naturally, though his pulse thrummed beneath the surface. He could feel the tension in the air. The attention.

He was being tested.

And he couldn't afford to fail.
