chapter 91: just started

Elias forced himself to eat, taking measured bites, his posture controlled. He could feel the weight of the room pressing in—some of the soldiers stealing glances, others openly staring.

The Alpha continued eating as if nothing were out of the ordinary, but Elias wasn't fooled. The man was aware of every flicker of movement, every subtle shift in the air.

He was waiting. Watching.

Elias finished his meal without incident, setting his utensils down with deliberate care. He wouldn't give them anything—no cracks, no hesitation, no sign that the Alpha's game was working.

But the Alpha wasn't done with him yet.

"Walk with me."

It wasn't a request.

Elias hesitated for the briefest moment before rising, following as the Alpha pushed back from the table and strode toward the doors. The moment they stepped into the corridor, the tension changed.

The eyes were gone.

But the game continued.

The Alpha walked slowly, his hands clasped behind his back, as if deep in thought. Elias matched his pace, careful to remain just slightly behind—never walking beside him, never overstepping.

"You've adapted quickly," the Alpha said after a moment.

Elias didn't answer. He knew better than to respond to something that wasn't truly a question.

The Alpha glanced at him, amusement flickering in his eyes. "No arguments?"

Elias met his gaze briefly before lowering it. "I'm only doing what is expected of me."

A soft chuckle. "Expected." The word rolled off his tongue as if he found it amusing. "And yet, I have a feeling you're far from predictable."

Elias didn't take the bait.

The Alpha stopped walking, turning slightly to face him. The sudden shift sent a sharp ripple of awareness through Elias's body, but he held still.

"That's what makes this interesting," the Alpha murmured.

Elias didn't move, didn't speak.

The Alpha took another step closer, his presence deliberate, controlled. "I could make this easy for you, you know."

Elias finally spoke, his voice even. "I doubt that."

The Alpha smirked. "You're right."

A breath of silence.

And then—

"You'll train with the soldiers tomorrow."

Elias's stomach twisted. He kept his expression still. "Why?"

The Alpha lifted a brow, as if entertained by the question. "Why not?"

Elias clenched his jaw. This was deliberate. Another test. Another way to force him into the open.

He had spent years hiding his training. Now, the Alpha was dragging it into the light.

"I'm not a soldier," Elias said carefully.

"No," the Alpha agreed. "But I want to see what you are."

Elias swallowed back the unease clawing at his chest. He should have expected this.

The Alpha's gaze sharpened, something unreadable flickering through it. "Tomorrow, then."

He turned and walked away, leaving Elias standing in the empty corridor.

His hands curled into fists.

The game was changing again.

And Elias was running out of ways to stay hidden.
